As the year-end approaches, American travelers inevitably start thinking about next year’s vacation. For travelers looking for a classic African safari experience, East and South Africa are perennial favorites.

But this year tour operators in-the-know, such as Denver based Africa Adventure Consultants, have exciting new safari options to share in the country of Zambia. Long passed over for the luxurious safari lodges of South Africa and the wide-open plains of Eastern Africa, Zambia is now coming into its own as a truly wild African safari destination. The country is home to the famous Victoria Falls, the rugged South Lungua National Park and up-and-coming Kafue National Park, the largest protected park in Zambia, and is predicted to be Africa’s hot new destination in 2009.

“Zambia is one of Africa’s best kept secrets,” says African expert Kent Redding, President of Africa Adventure Consultants, “it is less-charted territory that is still really wild. In the past few years we’ve seen a significant amount of investment in the safari lodges there, so the overall experience is quite comfortable and more importantly, free of the crowds that plague certain parts of Africa. I am confident that my clients are going to be choosing this destination for 2009!”

Leading a collection of new safari programs to Zambia for 2009, is Africa Adventure Consultants’ Animals in Action Safari.

This adventure brings travelers face-to-face with Africa’s largest hippo concentration. Aside from some of Africa’s best wildlife viewing, travelers spend their days alongside true experts in safari guiding, conservation and African wildlife including Lex Hes: wildlife photographer and author of Leopards of Londolozi and many others, Michael Lorentz: naturalist and elephant conservationist, Phil Berry: former park warden and giraffe expert, Derek Solomon: seasoned safari guide and author, Manda Chisanga: knowledgeable guide and expert on traditional medicinal plants. This unique, one-time-only safari takes place in November 2009.

After returning from a recent assessment of Zambia, Africa Adventure Consultants’ Kent Redding has decided to add Lower Zambezi National Park to several existing itineraries for 2009.

This remote region is not only a great place for game drives but travelers can also take part in fascinating walking and most appealing canoeing, boating and fishing safaris. “With an expert guide and a cooler full of cold drinks, you can float down the Zambezi fishing for tiger fish, which can reach up to 15 pounds or more and are really great fighters. Otherwise, try for the smaller bream,” adds Kent Redding. “The Lower Zambezi is truly an inimitable experience.” Africa Adventure Consultants also plans to launch additional exciting Zambia-based itineraries in early 2009.

Denver-based African safari expert Africa Adventure Consultants organizes safari adventures throughout East and Southern Africa, with destinations including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, Victoria Falls and Ethiopia.

The company sells destinations they know personally and offer guests assurance of strong on-the-ground partnerships with only the best local companies. Africa Adventure Consultants supports a variety of African conservation organizations, community-based tourism programs and humanitarian causes. And now, the company runs a completely carbon neutral office in Denver and is further committed to carbon neutral safaris by automatically offsetting 50% of each African trip they sell as well as offering clients the opportunity to offset the remaining 50%. With an eye on personal service, the principals create carbon neutral safaris and customized trips for individuals and small groups.

The company has the largest online database of specialty tour operators and is the new “go to” resource for vacationers who don’t want to do online research for hours on end to find the right adventure tour operator for their needs. VoyageTrek does all the work and provides qualified recommendations or “vacation match results” based on their research, word-of-mouth investigation, on-site visits, and tour operator interviews. Trips to Alaska, select fly fishing lodges, and dude ranches throughout the western United States are some of the top vacation match-making requests.

Recent expansions include African safaris, Galapagos Islands cruises, trips to Peru’s Machu Picchu or Ecuador, and tours throughout South America, starting with Argentina.

The 2009 Kilimanjaro Marathon will be held in Moshi, Tanzania, on Sunday, March 1. Now in its seventh year, the marathon is backed by the Tanzania Tourist Board. Its main sponsor is Tanzania Breweries Limited; other sponsors include Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, Air Tanzania, Kilimanjaro Sparkling Water, Good Year, Tanzanite One, Tanga Cement and others. It is the only IAAF- and AIMS-approved race in Tanzania.

Runners will range from serious contenders who train and compete year round to more casual athletes participating for the total uniqueness of the marathon route and cheering crowds. Last year, the Kilimanjaro Marathon attracted over 3,200 runners from over 40 countries around the world.

Numbers are expected to be up this year. Under the backdrop of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s largest mountain and the world’s highest freestanding mountain, the marathon is divided into a full race (42.2 kilometers), a half race (21.1 kilometers) and a fun run. In each category, the marathon course begins at the sports stadium in the town of Moshi, winds into rural villages and farms, veers through uphill paths, plunges into a swatch of forest, and whirls through coffee and banana plantations.

At every juncture, African music, meals and entertainment (including tribal dancers), make the event a wholly unique experience.

For the first time, the top three male and female Tanzanian winners in both the half and full marathons will be supported financially for one year after the marathon, during which time they will be trained to meet international standards for future races within and outside of Tanzania.

Current winning total prizes for men and women in the full marathon are $7,434, and for men and women in the half marathon $1,938. Donations from sponsors and individuals are being directed to numerous community projects in the town of Moshi. Donations will be made to Tanzania Athletics for their annual projects in other sports, and to local charities in Moshi. This year the emphasis will be on improvements to the maternity ward in Moshi’s town hospital, and expansion of space and new materials for the Kiboroloni Primary School, spearheaded by Wild Frontiers Ltd. and the Keys Hotel.

Plans are currently underway to include a marathon course for physically challenged runners.

Tanzania, the largest country in East Africa, is focused on wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism, with approximately 25 percent of the land protected by the Government.

It boasts 14 National Parks and 34 game reserves. It is the home of the tallest mountain in Africa, the legendary Mt. Kilimanjaro; the Serengeti, named in October 2006 as the New Seventh Wonder of the World by USA Today and Good Morning America; the world acclaimed Ngorongoro Crater, often called the Eighth Wonder of the World; Olduvai Gorge, the cradle of mankind; the Selous, the world’s largest game reserve; Ruaha, now the largest National Park in East Africa; the spice islands of Zanzibar; and seven world Heritage Sites. Most important for tourism, the Tanzanian people are warm and friendly, speak English, although Kiswahili is the national language, and the country is an oasis of peace and stability with a democratic and stable government.

DUBBED ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’, the Great Migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra making their annual pilgrimage around the Serengeti is a spectacle as unique as it is ancient. This distinctive phenomenon is the enactment of the Story of Life on the Serengeti Plains.

EAST Africa’s annual miracle is being performed again: the largest and longest overland migration on Earth is in full spate. More than two million wildebeest and zebra, with a few thousand gazelle hanging around the fringes are, as we read this, making their way across to the Western Corridor of the endless Serengeti Plains in Tanzania. Their journey across the Serengeti (nearly 15,000 sq kms, about the size of Wales) is made with the single aim of quenching their thirst and filling their bellies with the lush green grass in order to survive.

By this time next year, these herds will have covered in excess of 2,400km around the Serengeti Ecosystem (that’s about 4 times the distance between London and Aberdeen!). The herds head for the Maasai Mara in Kenya, which will be their transient home from August through to late November. Thereafter they return south to the Serengeti, their home for the rest of the year.

The story of the Great Migration is really the story of perseverance and determination of the one animal species many people don’t know much about - it is the story of the wildebeest, who defy death in every shape and form - from the vicious jaws of hyena, lion and leopard to the ruthless grasp of Africa’s largest crocodiles or from injury or sheer exhaustion. Witnessing such great numbers of wildlife moving in such precise, almost military-like formation is a spectacle that draws thousands of people from all over the world.

Apart from these migratory herds, however, the Serengeti has plenty of resident wildlife year- round due to the presence of permanent water from the Grumeti, Mara and Seronera Rivers. Those who have had the opportunity to witness around two million animals on the move are overcome by the spectacle of long lines of animals moving as one. Can you imagine the social organization involved in gathering such a great number and guiding them safely to greener pastures?

The wildebeest spend the season between December and April in the volcanic open plains near Ndutu in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with the rich nutrients in the grass in this area providing the main attraction for nursing wildebeest mothers. This is the place where the calves are born. Calving season is the only time that the wildebeest stay put in one area.

When the calves are ready to make their first trek in May, after the long rains and the grass and water supply dwindle in the Ndutu/southern Serengeti area, the wildebeest begin their annual migration heading first towards the Western Corridor where new food and water has been generated by the rains around the Grumeti and Mbalageti Rivers. The plains begin to dry and the green luscious grass turn brown.

By July, competition for food and water means that the herds have to move on, northwards across the treacherous Mara River (home to Africa’s largest crocodiles) and into the Maasai Mara with its myriad of river systems. Here they eat their fill and by December ready to make their journey back to the Serengeti. And the cycle begins again …

Kent Redding, president of Africa Adventure Consultants and one of the leading experts in African travel today, outlined what he sees as key trends in travel to Africa in 2009. “Destinations like Zambia and Zimbabwe are lighting up,” said Redding, “and travelers are increasingly incorporating eco-friendly travel options into their safaris. Our clients are also, now more than ever, looking for ways to stretch their dollar the furthest when planning a safari to Africa.” Redding’s five key trends in African travel for 2009 include carbon neutral travel, in which 2009 will be the moment of truth for carbon neutral travel and carbon offsets. Consumers have proved slow to fully grasp these initiatives, and these trends will either take hold in 2009, or fade away. The other trends identified by Redding are categorized as wild Africa, a second chance for Zimbabwe, competitive prices and value.

Zambia is definitely the rising star of the African travel industry, Redding said. With new properties, remote game reserves and specialist safari guides, in-the-know safari operators like Africa Adventure Consultants can now offer a true wild Africa experience. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe may be coming back on the radar when it comes to African safaris, following word of the power-sharing agreement among the politicians there. Soon the country may be in a position to rebuild and flourish and the entire African travel industry anxiously awaits its rebirth. And as domestic airfare prices soar in 2009, air travel to Africa is still affordable. With new flight routes to Africa being added all the time, prices should remain affordable well into 2009. As the American economy faces some of its greatest challenges since the Great Depression, even luxury travelers are branching out and demanding more value for their travel dollars. Many travelers are seeking out destination specialists, such as Africa Adventure Consultants, who can help them plan an itinerary that is an outstanding travel experience but at less overall cost.

Denver-based African safari expert Africa Adventure Consultants organizes safari adventures throughout East and Southern Africa, with destinations including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, Victoria Falls and most recently, Ethiopia.

The company sells destinations they know personally and offer guests assurance of strong on-the-ground partnerships with only the best local companies. Africa Adventure Consultants supports a variety of African conservation organizations, community-based tourism programs and humanitarian causes.

The company runs a completely carbon neutral office in Denver and is further committed to carbon neutral safaris by automatically offsetting 50 percent of each African trip they sell as well as offering clients the opportunity to offset the remaining 50 percent.

With an eye on personal service, the principals create carbon neutral safaris and customized trips for individuals and small groups.

Africa Adventure Consultants’ Serengeti Classic Private Camps safari was honored in this month’s National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the top twelve best Animal Experiences of a Lifetime. As described by the magazine, “The spectacle of 1.5 million wildebeest plus hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles storming the plains of East Africa – the Great Migration – has been called ‘the biggest buffet on Earth’ by Africa Adventure Consultants founder Kent Redding.”

This African trip of a lifetime is featured alongside migrations of caribou in Alaska, monarch butterflies in Mexico and sandhill cranes in New Mexico. “The wildebeest migration is called ‘The Great Migration’ because there is nothing in the world that can even come close in terms of magnitude,” said Kent Redding, president of Africa Adventure Consultants. “Not only do you have this amazing spectacle of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles, but also the drama of all the predators following these massive herds. This is quintessential Africa, and this Serengeti Classic Private Camps adventure is the ultimate way to experience the migration in East Africa.”

Four days spent camping and viewing the Great Migration in the famed Serengeti National Park in Northern Tanzania are just the highlight of Africa Adventure Consultant’s 10-Day Tanzania Camping Safari. Peregrine has added new adventures to its Africa program to tempt travellers beyond the game parks to experience the energy and diversity of the world’s oldest inhabited continent.

In East Africa, the company has introduced a twist on the typical safari with its new Essence of Tanzania adventure, which combines a fully-supported mobile camp (with ensuite toilets) in the best game parks with a unique and unforgettable cultural experience. There is game viewing: elephants (and baobab trees) in Tarangire and tree-climbing lions in Lake Manyara, as well as
up-close encounters with the ‘big five’ in Ngorongoro Crater and the nearby private conservation area. The Serengeti is the site of the greatest animal migration on earth, and the flexibility of the mobile camp ensures the best possible wildlife viewing.

But perhaps the greatest highlight of the trip is spending time with the Hadzabe Bushmen, Tanzania’s oldest tribe and nomadic hunter-gatherers thought to be related to the San people of the Kalahari. Very few tourists have had the opportunity to visit their village and join in a hunt. The 11-day Essence of Tanzania tour departs from Kilimanjaro Airport monthly between June
and March and costs $5335 per person, twin share, including accommodation, transport, Peregrine leader, most meals, park entry fees and domestic flight.

In Southern Africa, Peregrine has introduced two, eight-day adventures that can be combined to form the 15-day Botswana and Zambia Discovery tour. For wildlife enthusiasts, this is the ultimate trip, combining private game reserves and some of Africa’s best-known game parks.

The trip starts at Victoria Falls and heads to remote Kafue National Park for two full days on the watch for lion, leopard and antelope. The South Luangwa National Park has one of the richest concentrations of game in Africa – including huge pods of hippos.

Heading into Botswana, first stop is Chobe National Park before the vast, arid expanse of the Makgadikgadi salt pans (for quad bike exploring) en route for the Khwai River region, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve – where spotting the ‘big five’ is virtually guaranteed! Botswana’s most famous attraction is left until the end: the magnificent, tranquil waterways of the Okavango Delta, where motorised transport is traded for the peace of a paddled canoe (mokoro).

The cost of all Peregrine trips includes carbon off-setting the land and domestic air portion of
the trip. For further information call your travel agent or Peregrine Travel Centre on 1300 854
