Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy
July 14, 2008 on 8:37 am | In Adventure Travel, Africa, Cabinweb, Ethiopia, Kenya, London, Outdoors, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, United Kingdom | Comments Off
Good news for the Ol Pejeta Conservancy! A recently concluded wildlife census indicates that wildlife numbers are still on the increase.
Every year, the Ol Pejeta Wildlife and Ecological Monitoring Department conducts an aerial census to assess wildlife population trends. This is done from a low-flying aircraft moving at a constant speed and altitude. The 2008 census, conducted in April, shows continuing increases in numbers of most wildlife species found on the conservancy.
The census indicates an average annual increase of 15% in overall wildlife populations over the last three years. The elephant population for example, has risen from 159 to 296, while the giraffe population has increased from 132 to 172. Overall wildlife numbers have increased from 6,759 in 2005 to 10,167 in 2008.
“Several factors have contributed to these results; in general most species have benefited from a more conducive environment and increased habitat brought about by the expansion of the former Sweetwaters Game Reserve to create the current Ol Pejeta Conservancy in early 2007” says Nathan Gichohi, Ecological Monitoring Manager on Ol Pejeta.
The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is currently home to Kenya’s largest population of the endangered black rhino and is the closest place to Nairobi where it is still possible to view all of the “Big Five”.
In February, the first ever White Rhino Calf was born on the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, bringing the number of white rhinos in the conservancy up to nine.
March also saw a new addition to the family of 42 who lave found peace and refuge at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary with the arrival of “Gashuhe” who was rescued from a business premises in Rwanda.
All profits from tourism are reinvested into further conservation activities within the Laikipia district and to support a Community Outreach Programme that works with our neighbours to implement development projects that create tangible social benefit.
If you would like to get involved in Ol Pejeta’s wildlife success please contact info@olpejetaconservancy.org or visit www.olpejetaconservancy.org
Thanks to its private status The Ol Pejeta Conservancy also allows such unforgettable pleasures as the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary (the only place in Kenya to see these highly endangered animals), visits to Morani, a tame black rhino, night game drives, guided bush walks and camel-trekking across game-teaming plains. Trek in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park in search of Mountain Gorilla and Golden Monkey, see big game in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth NP and Kenya’s Masai Mara, visit a Chimpanzee Sanctuary and take part in a flagship community project at Jinja during Dragoman Overland’s full-on 15-night Great Apes & Gameparks expedition departing Kampala 8th September 2008. (Trip code SKN178).
From Uganda’s capital, Kampala, travellers head to Lake Bunyonyi, take a dugout canoe (pirogues) across the serene waters to Muko Forest and visit the Batwa Tribe. Next up, for many the journey’s high point, Mountain Gorilla trekking in the stunning highlands of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.
The area currently has four habituated groups, the largest is the Susa Group, comprising 35 members including 3 silverbacks and is the original group studied by Diana Fossie. The Trebize, Sabinyo and Amahoro are smaller, with 13 members in each group, each involving varying levels of trekking to encounter. Also endemic to the same bamboo habitat as the gorillas, is Africa’s rarest primate, the Golden Monkey, and treks can be organised to view the two troupes that have become habituated in the NP since 2003.
Return to Uganda, and Queen Elizabeth National Park, which while not displaying the proliferation of wildlife found in the Serengeti, does possess quality - elephant, leopard, buffalo, lion (four of the big five) and stunning bird-life. Here, wild camping surrounded by hippos, elephants and lions is the ultimate reality safari experience.
Next, a boat trip to Ngamba Island in Lake Victoria to visit a Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Uganda LIBYAN HOTEL
June 30, 2008 on 5:32 am | In Africa, Hotels, Uganda | Comments Off
One of the best-known brand names in Uganda’s hospitality industry, the Windsor Lake Victoria Hotel in Entebbe, is now reported to changed its name to Libyan Hotel, possibly reflecting their new ownership vested in the Libyan Africa Investment Company (LAICO). However, marketing circles in Uganda have swiftly denounced the move blaming the new owners of “knowing nothing about brands and tradition” and throwing out a well-known age old brand name for self glorification.
It is expected that the general public will continue to refer to the hotel as the “Lake Vic” irrespective to the new owners’ desires, as it has been fondly nick-named by its many patrons over the decades. This is something the new owners may struggle to come to terms with as being the market reality in Uganda.
One other hotel operator in Entebbe was smiling with glee when talking to this correspondent about the development. He said: “If they want to mess up their name that is good with all the rest of us, we will exploit it. Just look at their renovations, they took over 10 years and still do not compare with new hotels in Entebbe, they changed so many managers and had many problems with strikes, let them learn their lesson the hard way if they do not know better, we others shall appreciate their mistakes.”

Game-Free Viewing With Wildlife Worldwide
June 3, 2008 on 7:16 am | In Adventure Travel, Africa, Cabinweb, Kenya, London, Outdoors, Rwanda, Scotland, Uganda, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments OffCampaigners hoping to preserve Rwanda’s endangered Mountain Gorillas are attempting to emphasise their plight by offering Silverback, a game simulating the lives of the animals, free to web-enabled mobile phone users. Ken Banks, prime mover behind the initiative, in association with campaign group Flora and Fauna International (FFI), assured the public that he hasn’t produced a game ‘where gorillas are chasing people or doing bad things’.
Bank’s maintains that he’s created one around ‘some kind of reality… to give a sense of the challenges they (gorillas) face both naturally and through human threat’. A far cry from Grand Theft Auto 4! They may be getting digital coverage, but to see Mountain Gorillas in the wild, a world-apart from broadband ‘gamers’, Wildlife Worldwide offer the real deal during a 6-day small-group, Gorilla tracking tour in Parc National des Volcans, departing London Heathrow next departing 21st June and 12th July 2008.
Parc National des Volcans is an untamed region of central Africa where ancient volcanoes covered in rich, green rainforest form part of the much larger Virunga Conservation Area. The park is best known for Dian Fossey’s twenty-year pioneering studies of Gorilla behaviour, and it is largely thanks to her that gorilla poaching was greatly reduced. Nearly half the world’s wild and increasingly rare Mountain Gorilla population live on the slopes of the Virunga Volcano range.
Guests will experience the rare privilege of trekking amongst the misty, forested volcanoes, visiting one of five habituated families, for a rewarding close-up of these amazing primates. Guests are based at the recently renovated Gorilla’s Nest, situated close to the park entrance. On a clear day the lodge offers spectacular views across to the Virunga volcanoes and surrounding landscape. As well as Gorilla, the park is also home to 76 mammal species including rare Golden Monkeys. Further highlights include climbing the Visoke or Karisimbi volcanoes, visiting the Karisoke Centre, set up by Dian Fossey, or enjoy gentle strolls around the picturesque villages near the lakes.
The tour costs from £1,795 p/p including scheduled flights, tra
nsfers, full board lodge accommodation at Gorilla’s Nest, one Gorilla trekking permit and expertly guided wildlife viewing.
