Air New Zealand Fare Increases
April 29, 2008 on 8:56 am | In Airlines, Pacific Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji Islands, New South Wales, Sydney, Samoa, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, Micronesia, Melanesia | Comments Off
Air New Zealand’s domestic, Tasman and Pacific Island fares are about to cost more as a result of high fuel prices.
Group General Manager Short Haul Airlines Bruce Parton says the cost of fares in all three markets will rise by an average of three percent for travel booked from Wednesday, March 26.
Mr Parton said that Air New Zealand regretted having to increase fares to at least partially recover some of the fuel increases. It had shielded customers for as long as possible from soaring fuel prices through its fuel hedging programme, he said. “When domestic fares were last increased due to fuel costs in May 2006, the price of Singapore jet fuel per barrel was USD$87. Today it has reached USD$130 with a USD$10 increase in the past month alone. This recent price escalation has left Air New Zealand with little option but to increase fares. A decision on the scale of long haul fare increases is expected to be made within the next fortnight.” Mr Parton said that while the airline remained committed to everyday low fares, it could not rule out further fare increases if fuel costs do not drop.
Mr Parton said Air New Zealand had worked hard over the past two years to minimise operating costs and this had been a significant contributor also to shielding customers from fare increases.
“Our challenge remains to ensure that we continue to drive costs within our control down, and keep prices as low as possible through our innovative initiatives like grabaseat, which offers fares as low as one dollar.”
More Tasman Air New Zealand flights

Air New Zealand will increase capacity to Melbourne and Sydney later in the year adding more direct services and using larger aircraft.
From 26 October, additional capacity will be added on the Auckland-Melbourne route by using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft instead of an Airbus A320 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday afternoons. From 16 December onwards a third daily service will operate from Auckland on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (Sunday flight overnights and returns Monday morning). Total capacity between Auckland and Melbourne will increase by 6% as a result.
Services from Auckland-Sydney will increase from 15 December onwards with an additional A320 return service operating on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Air New Zealand’s Group General Manager Short Haul Airline Bruce Parton said that this increase reflects the strong ongoing growth of Tasman services.
“We are also expecting a further increase in customer demand for seats from July onwards as we start introducing in-flight entertainment at every seat and newly reconfigured cabins on our 767 and A320 aircraft which operate on these routes.”

SAS Scandinavian Airlines is set to launch a global marketing platform from April using the uniqueness of the three Scandinavian languages - Danish, Norwegian, Swedish - and also Finnish, to highlight the renowned style and design of Scandinavia integrated in all of its product and, particularly, its premium economy class ‘Economy Extra.’
“The Scandinavian languages, like the region’s sleek, stylish designs, reflect the real essence of what makes this vast northern region so unique,” Lars Olofsson, General Manager SAS Australia and New Zealand said. “By incorporating Swedish words in our advertising such as ‘Bättre’ (meaning “better” seats, service, food) and ‘Störst’(meaning “largest” Scandinavian airline), we are utilising the Scandinavian language to describe what a truly Scandinavian product SAS is,” Olofsson said.
“The new platform has a very clean, simple design, which is very Scandinavian in itself, and in combination with using a Scandinavian word and an image of our aircraft we believe we have created an eye catching concept that clearly stands out as Scandinavia and Scandinavian Airlines,” he said.
For the Australian market the first advertising campaign is aimed directly at promoting the benefits of the SAS premium economy class ‘Economy Extra’ to the long haul traveller. Launched on all SAS long haul routes in 2002, Economy Extra incorporates a separate cabin with wide (47cm), comfortable seats and almost a metre of leg room – “key elements to a more restful long haul flight”, Olofsson said. “SAS is the only airline offering a premium economy product directly to Northern Europe It is great value for those leisure and business travellers who are looking for extra comfort for the journey.”
An SAS Economy Extra Combination fare from Australia to Europe via Copenhagen or Stockholm starts from $2699 plus taxes and surcharges starting from $460. Lufthansa unique boarding concept
April 24, 2008 on 7:47 am | In Airlines, Germany | Comments Off
The new passenger handling area between the C and D concourses in Terminals 1 and 2 was officially inaugurated at Frankfurt Airport on 17th March, 2008. With two waiting levels and amply dimensioned bridges, the new pier in the passageway linking the C and D concourses meets optimally all the requirements for operations with Lufthansa’s future flagship, the Airbus A380.
Entirely new is the pier concept allowing passengers to board their flights direct from two separate levels. “The new and exclusive Lufthansa gate area located on two levels is unique, worldwide. Even before the first 380 enters service with the Lufthansa fleet, we are already laying on more space and comfort for passengers prior to flight departure,” said Karl Ulrich Garnadt, Executive Vice President Services and Human Resources at Lufthansa Passenger Airlines.
With the new two-level boarding concept, Lufthansa can now channel First, Business and Economy-Class passengers into separate areas as soon as they access the waiting and boarding zone at the airport. Once through the security controls, First and Business-Class passengers as well as status customers go straight to the Priority Gates on Departures Level Three.
These gates, designed in Lufthansa business-lounge style, offer comfortable waiting zones with easy chairs to relax in, as well as workstations equipped with wireless Internet access and spacious bistros serving drinks and light menus. First-Class passengers as well as HON Circle members or Senators also have the use of an exclusive Senator Lounge with a panoramic view of the airport apron, and the take-off and landing strips. Four open gates for Economy-Class passengers on the second level are equipped with ample seating arrangements and snackbars.
Spacious glass facades give the interior a bright, friendly and airy atmosphere. The open gates allow passengers to move around freely in the entire handling areas and afford a good view of traffic on the airport apron. Extra comfort is also characteristic in the passageway from the check-in counters to the new pier. Wider moving walkways and escalators help passengers easily negotiate their way through the passageway, daylight and a daylight-adaptive lighting system light up the gangways and air-conditioning keeps the temperature at a pleasant level.
Three A380s and a Boeing 747 can be handled, simultaneously, at the new C/D pier. Gates C15 and C16 are each additionally equipped to accommodate two smaller aircraft, e.g. of the A320 type.
