The next total solar eclipse will occur on 22nd July 2009 and will exhibit the longest period of totality ever witnessed in the 21st century, casting a shadow across areas of India, China, Japan, and Indonesia.

Wildlife Worldwide offers a unique opportunity to view this remarkable natural phenomenon, from a vantage-point near China’s city of Hangzhou close to the centre line (the point at which the event’s length is greatest). Airasia Indonesia flights to Singapore

Another new airline has joined Singapore Changi Airport’s air network today. AirAsia Indonesia’s inaugural flight touched down at 10:15 a.m. in Singapore from Pekanbaru, the capital city of the Riau Province in Indonesia. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) gave a warm reception to welcome AirAsia Indonesia’s maiden flight and its important guests onboard, which included AirAsia Indonesia’s chief executive officer, Captain Dharmadi.

CAAS’ director-general and chief executive officer, Mr. Lim Kim Choon, said, “Last year, some 1.96 million visitor arrivals came from Indonesia, which accounted for nearly 20% of the total visitors to Singapore. Total passenger movements by air between Indonesia and Singapore reached 3.86 million in 2007, registering a 6.5% year-on-year growth over 2006. The launch of AirAsia Indonesia’s new service between the two countries today is well-poised to capitalize on such strong growth.”

AirAsia Indonesia will operate a total of 12 weekly flights to Singapore, comprising 6 weekly flights from Pekanbaru and subsequently 6 weekly flights from Padang by the end of 2008.

With the launch of AirAsia Indonesia’s flights to Singapore, there are 12 airlines operating more than 630 weekly passenger flights between Singapore and 12 cities in Indonesia.

Indonesia AirAsia, which is managed by Air Asia in Indonesia, is the third airline to commence operations in Changi Airport this year, following Air Asia and TNT Airways.

Changi Airport is served by 80 scheduled airlines, operating over 4,400 weekly scheduled flights to 191 cities in 61 countries.

Hong Kong Express Airways adds flights throughout Asia

HONG KONG - Hong Kong Express Airways continues to strengthen its presence and position in Asia as the carrier of choice in Hong Kong with increased services and new routes.

With a firm understanding of market needs and demands, Hong Kong Express Airways recently launched daily services to Shanghai and Beijing, as well as a four flights a week service to Seoul.

The carrier is planning new routes to Osaka, Phuket, Denpasar and Manila in September, as well as additional routes to various cities in Japan in October.

Raymond Ng, director, Commercial, Hong Kong Express Airways said, “We are delighted to strengthen and diversify our network and provide passengers with increased flexibility to travel throughout the region.”

Okinawa has emerged as a hot-spot for Hong Kong travelers, especially beach lovers and divers.

Hong Kong Express Airways’ Hong Kong to Okinawa service will be offered daily to meet the growing demand.

“At the same time, we have rescheduled some of our less-traveled routes and reduced capacity on others to minimize the impact of rising fuel prices.

This will include the temporary suspension of the Hiroshima and Okayama services beginning September 1, 2008,” said Mr. Ng.

Gecko’s Gets Off the Beaten Track in Asia

From yak trekking with nomadic herdsmen in Mongolia to hill tribe trekking in Thailand, Gecko’s has introduced a range of Asian adventures that go beyond the beaten track to where there’s often no track at all in the 2008-10 South East Asia and China brochure.

The 14-day Mongolian Yak Safari is a wander across the un-tracked steppe, with yaks as ‘support vehicles’ and includes staying in the traditional felt ‘gers’ (tents) of the nomadic herdsmen. Eschewing the long driving days of typical Mongolian tours, the safari takes a more leisurely, low-impact approach.

The trip begins in Ulaanbaaatar with a one-day train trip along the Trans Mongolian route to the Ilk Nart Nature Reserve in the Gobi Desert, a protected community reserve rarely visited by tourists, where the group stays for several days in a low-impact ger camp as guests of the local Dalanjargal community.

Three quarters of the Mongolian population still lives in gers year-round and the trip is a chance to experience the traditional nomadic lifestyle, accompanied by local herdsmen.

From a second base, the group undertakes a four-day trek skirting the southern fringes of Khan Khentii, a wilderness area three times the size of Yellowstone National Park. In the spirit of the nomads, the group will be self-sufficient, with all equipment – including ‘regular’ tents and a communal dining ger – carried on yak carts, and following no particular route; trekking no more than 20km per day; meeting local people, and seeking the most idyllic campsite each evening.

The trip concludes in the capital, Ulaanbaatar. The 14-day trip has six departures between May and August, 2009 and costs $1395 per person, twin share, plus a US$200 local payment.

Crystal Debuts 125 New World Cruise Excursions

Crystal Cruises is introducing an unprecedented number of Crystal Adventures shore excursions for its 2009 World Cruise.

Sailing roundtrip from Los Angeles Jan. 21, the 106-day expedition boasts more than 300 tours, including 125 new.
