Taiwan is a country that has a rich and varied heritage and its fusion of Chinese, Fujianese, Hakka, Cantonese and Aboriginal cultures make for an exciting year of festivals not to be missed in 2013. Next year also heralds in the Year of the Snake which according to Chinese mythology is associated with beauty and wisdom, esoteric knowledge and spiritual discovery.

Chinese New Year, 9 – 13 February 2013
The Chinese New Year is one of the most important festivals in Chinese culture and in Taiwan celebrations last for up to four days. Spending time with family is an integral part of this public holiday and gifts are exchanged between children and young adults; the most traditional gift being red envelopes of money. It is believed that evil spirits are driven away by loud noise, so the Chinese New Year is a very loud celebration. Long strings of firecrackers are set off throughout the holiday, and there are many displays of fireworks lighting up the evening skies.

Lantern Festival (Shang Yuan Festival), 24 February – 10 March 2013
A colourful and vibrant festival, the Lantern Festival is held annually on the first full moon of the lunar calendar. This event forms the final celebrations of the traditional Chinese New Year and the two-week long festival is celebrated throughout the country with towns and villages putting on beautiful displays of decorative lanterns depicting birds, beasts and historical figures.

Alishan Cherry Blossom Festival, spring 2013
The Alishan Cherry Blossom Festival is one of Taiwan’s most popular flower festivals and is held annually in Chiayi County. With an altitude above 2,000 meters, Alishan is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna and in spring the area is covered by more than 19,000 cherry trees. Visitors will be able to see Yoshino cherry tree blossoms as the area has the largest number of this variety than anywhere else on the island.

Dragon Boat Festival, 12 June 2013
The Dragon Boat Festival began as an occasion to drive off evil spirits and to find peace in life. It originates from an event which purportedly took place in ancient years when national poet, Qu Yan, decided to drown himself in the Miluo River to protest against the cruel government. People in the surrounding villages tried to rescue him by rowing down the river by boat and this search became the basis for the Dragon Boat Race.

Today, the Dragon Boat Races are a key event with huge crowds gathering to watch the excitement. Teams compete to the sound of beating drums and rowers win by grabbing the flag at the end of the course. Many traditional customs accompany the festivities such as the drinking of Hsiung Huang wine and children are given fragrant sachets, both of which are thought to ward off evil spirits. A culinary highlight of the festival is eating the traditional dish Zongzi which is glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. It is said that the origins of this dish trace back to the story of Qu Yan when the local people who admired him dropped sticky rice triangles into the river for the fish to eat.

Ghost Festival, 1-29 August 2013
Traditionally, it is believed that ghosts haunt the island of Taiwan for the entire seventh lunar month from dawn on the first day of the month, when the gates of the netherworld open, ending on the 29th day of the month, when the gates close. The Ghost Festival combines the Buddhist Ullambana Festival and the Taoist Ghost Festival, both of which honour dead spirits.

Highlights of the event include folk-art performances, the opening of the gates of hell and the release of burning water lanterns. During the festival, families make offerings to their ancestors and ghosts of the underworld.

Mooncake Festival, 19-21 September 2013
The Taiwanese Mooncake Festival is also called the Mid-Autumn Festival and has become an important time for families to spend together. Many people meet in the parks to enjoy the moon, considered to be at its brightest and fullest at this time of year and the making and eating of moon cakes is one of the hallmark traditions of the festival. Moon cakes are large round pastries stuffed with sweet bean paste which symbolise
unity and togetherness. Outdoor barbecues are also a key component of this festival and have become a popular affair for friends and family to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

Taiwan International Cycling Festival, autumn 2013
Since it debuted in 2010, the Taiwan Cycling Festival has continued to bring together world-renowned cycling teams for a weekend of top-class international racing as they compete for the Taiwan Cup.

Taking place in the Hualien and Taitung counties in scenic eastern Taiwan, the festival is built around two main events, the Formosa 900 and the Taiwan KOM Challenge with a number of smaller cycling events taking place over the course of the week. Amateur enthusiasts attending the
festival are encouraged to experience Taiwan’s touring itineraries and discover the variety of cycling trails and routes whilst enjoying the island’s culture, cuisine and natural wonders.

Royal Laurel Class passengers who go to the EVA Air website can pre-order from a selection of meals that resemble main course offerings in a restaurant. Dishes are made with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Choices include Western favorites and popular Asian specialties such as steak, lobster, Taiwanese beef noodles and more.

EVA’s new Royal Laurel Class top cabin and the advance meal-order service are available on all of the airline’s Los Angeles and New York flights now.

To pre-select meals, ticketed Royal Laurel Class passengers can go to the EVA Air home page, select Book and Manage Your Trip at the top of the page and scroll down to the Meal Order window.

Passengers can log in using the confirmation or passenger record locator number shown on their e-ticket or with their Evergreen Club membership numbers.

On board, the Royal Laurel Class dining experience can start with a glass of Dom Perignon champagne followed by wine with dinner.
EVA’s online meal service gives passengers more choices and ensures that they get what they want to eat.

Ordering meals online in advance also benefits the environment by reducing food waste and cutting the number of extra meals EVA needs to carry onboard to satisfy passengers’ preferences.

EVA is investing $100 million to upgrade top cabins on all of its Boeing 777-300ERs with new, fully lie-flat seats surrounded by added features especially designed for passenger comfort and convenience.

EVA has configured Royal Laurel Class in a reverse herringbone layout so that passengers at windows can look out without turning and those in the center can comfortably dine and talk with travel companions. For rest or work, passengers can just as easily adjust their seats and take advantage of privacy panels. Seats are 26 inches wide, recline 180 degrees and stretch out 79 inches.

EVA has also added coat hooks; spaces for shoe stowage; nooks for water, glasses and reading materials; and seat-side tables for beverages, snacks or notepads, all within easy reach.

In addition, EVA has equipped the cabin with the latest audio and video technologies, starting with 15.4-inch touchscreens and high-fidelity noise-canceling headphones.

Passengers with personal electronic devices can use multi-function AV-input outlets, USB and iPod ports on a system equipped with software such as Media Player, Photo Viewer and PDF Reader.

It also installed 110V power sockets and extra-large pull-out tables, all designed to equip business travelers with personal in-flight offices when they need them.

Royal Laurel Class amenity kits feature Bvlgari products such as green tea moisturizing lotion that’s lightly scented with clean, fresh hints of orange, jasmine and rose, lip balm, a comb, toothbrush, toothpaste and a clothes brush.

It also offers high-quality comforters that are 79 inches long.

EVA completed introduction of Royal Laurel Class on Los Angeles flights at the end of November 2012 and in New York at the end of August 2012.

It will begin to roll out the service on more routes in early 2013, starting with San Francisco, followed by Toronto, Paris, Amsterdam and London.

It will finalize Royal Laurel Class cabin upgrades by August 2013.

Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration has approved EVA Air’s request to provide in-flight mobile and Wi-Fi communication aboard its new Boeing 777-300ERs.

The carrier will begin to take delivery of the new aircraft and make the communication services available to passengers in 2014.

EVA is the first airline in Taiwan to secure approval for its passengers to make mobile phone calls and use Wi-Fi in flight.

EVA ordered a total of seven Boeing 777-300ERs in May 2012.

The airline will equip them with the latest Panasonic eX3 in-flight entertainment system and a GCS (Global Communications Suite), and will be the first in the aviation industry to combine both technologies on Boeing 777-300ERs during the assembly process.

EVA’s GCS will operate on an independent frequency that has been approved by Taiwan’s National Communications Commission and will not interfere with flight navigation communication or jeopardize flight safety.

The GCS service will enable passengers to make mobile phone calls, browse the Internet and use their own personal, Wi-Fi-enabled mobile phones, tablets or laptops to read and send email from the comfort of their own seats.
The Panasonic eX3 is a new and upgraded in-flight entertainment system that provides a more user-friendly and visually inviting environment, complete with a high-definition screen for watching movies and feature programming.

The airline will make it available to passengers in all three of the cabins it is configuring on the new Boeing 777-300ERs — Economy, Elite and Royal Laurel Classes. The Android-based system will give passengers a wide range of options.

They will even be able to browse an online library and check connecting-flight status and baggage-claim locations.

EVA is further enhancing in-flight entertainment experiences such as watching movies and playing video games by upgrading systems in its Royal Laurel Class business cabin with eX3 16-inch touch screens and 4.1-inch LCD touch remote controls.

At the same time, it is equipping Elite and Economy classes with expanded eX3 11.1-inch monitors. EVA became the first airline in Taiwan to provide in-seat audio video on demand (AVOD) entertainment when it introduced the systems in 2003.

The carrier is continuing to improve and upgrade its seats, cabins and overall service quality to successfully meet passengers’ needs and expectations and make flying a pleasure.

Niigata is located on the Sea of Japan coast in the central part of Honshu, Japan’s main island.

The area is not only rich in natural resources and agriculture but also well-known for its ski resorts.

The delivery marks the beginning of TransAsia Airways’ fleet enhancement plan — from 2013 to 2022, the airline will receive a further 31 new aircraft, which includes its second A330-300, six A321-200, 12 A321-neo and 12 ATR-600, three of which are optional.

“The delivery of A330 is another milestone for TransAsia Airways,” said Vincent M. Lin, chairman of TransAsia Airways. “Together with the second A330-300 expected to be in operation early next year, we will see an annual growth of 40 percent in passenger capacity on international routes. As the first wide-body jet, A330-300 aircraft will facilitate new destination expansion and enhance our competitiveness among peers.

In addition, its advanced technology and enhanced interior layout will ensure a better and more comfortable flight experience for our passengers.”

The stretched-fuselage A330-300 matches twin-engine efficiency with increased passenger capacity.

This jetliner has a range of up to 5,450 nautical miles while carrying 300 passengers in a typical two-cabin arrangement seating 32 in business class at a 60-inch seat pitch, and 268 in economy class at 32-inch seat pitch. All seats are equipped with an individual in-flight entertainment system.

Compared to its peers, the A330 is an all-round aircraft, capable of achieving efficiency and keeping operating costs low.

Its versatility in operating different kinds of routes and its optimum performance on medium to long-haul routes, more specifically seven- to nine-hour range, are in line with TransAsia’s expansion strategy to enlarge its international destination network and to compete on a global platform.

“Fleet and network are the two most important aspects of an airline,” Vincent said.

“Making the right choice on fleet purchase is critical to an airline’s performance.

To mitigate the risk of fluctuating fuel price, we selected ATR fleet for domestic routes for its light weight, fuel efficiency and safety.

We also ordered 12 A321neo aircraft, ahead of other Taiwanese airlines, for its flexibility and range capability and fuel saving of up to 15 percent. A321neo will be the key model for our fleet moving forward.

“The first A330-300 aircraft will be deployed on international routes to Japan and Singapore.

In the near future, we are also looking to further expand our network to include destinations within nine-hour radius from Taiwan, including Sydney, New Zealand, Guam, and the Middle East,” Vincent said.

Since 2010, TransAsia Airways has doubled the number of scheduled international routes to 16 destinations including Singapore, Macau, Vietnam, South Korea and Japan. In 2012, the airline has rolled out a series of service upgrade initiatives to offer value added experience to passengers, including the launch of its new crew uniform, new in-flight menu and new airport lounge at Taoyuan International Airport with an Oxygen Bar.

The airline celebrated the new service with festivities beginning at the departure gate in Taipei and continuing in Hakodate upon its first regularly scheduled arrival.

“With the launch of Hakodate service and our existing Sapporo operations, EVA is now providing close to 3,000 seats a week and giving passengers more access between Hokkaido and Taiwan than any other airline.

Our schedule and frequency give business and leisure passengers greater flexibility and more itinerary options, significantly reduce travel time and provide exceptionally convenient service.

Passengers can arrive in one city and depart from the other,” said EVA Executive Vice President Austin Cheng during the Taipei launch ceremony.

EVA is operating a 252-seat Airbus 330-200 on its new route. Flight BR138 departs Taoyuan at 11:05 a.m. and arrives in Hakodate at 3:35 p.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Return flight BR137 leaves Hakodate at 4:50 p.m. and lands back in Taoyuan at 8:15 p.m. on the same day.

“Hakodate is EVA’s first new route under the Open Sky Agreement between Japan and Taiwan,” said EVA Chairman James Jeng.

“We have been serving the route with seasonal charters since 1998 and have provided approximately 400 charter flights. The regularly scheduled operations we are offering now make travel between Hakodate and Taipei even more attractive and accessible.

Hakodate is a very promising travel market.”

Hokkaido offers four distinct seasons and year-round attractions, from cherry blossoms in spring and lavender in summer to maple leaves in fall and snow in winter, and has become a leading destination for travelers from Taiwan. Those flying EVA can arrange trips so that they arrive in either Hakodate or Sapporo and depart from the other city. EVA will add a third weekly flight between Taiwan and Hokkaido on Thursdays, starting in December.

Flight time between Taoyuan and Hakodate is about 3.5 hours.

The redesign simplifies functions and presents information in a fresh format so that it is easier to read and navigate. It also groups all of EVA’s special deals and travel-product sales in one location, right on the homepage.

Now, a visitor to EVAAir.com can more quickly find what they need.

The redesign features a cleaner design, uses fewer banners, simplifies services such as online booking, and organizes product information by theme.

It facilitates online ticket purchases, meal selection and advance duty-free orders, reflecting market trends.

And for the convenience of passengers worldwide, the website is also available in five languages — traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, English, Japanese and German.

In every language, the site guides passengers through the ticketing process and more.

It also features new tools such as a world clock and a digital edition of EVA’s recently rebranded inflight magazine, en Voyage.

In addition, EVA improved the function that enables business travelers to order favorite dishes and special meals in advance of flights from a larger menu than it can offer in flight. And it will gradually introduce more options for these travelers.

Travelers can check schedules, book, buy and reserve seats through travel agents and brokers, by calling an EVA ticket office or via the redesigned website.
