The Rhine Valley Music Festival (24–31 May 2009) features seven private concerts performed by top rank musicians in a variety of historic buildings along one of Europe’s great rivers. The audience lives on a modern and comfortable ship, chartered exclusively for the week, disembarking for concerts or to explore historic towns and sites along the way.
Some of the finest musicians in Germany and Switzerland (and Britain), including the Baden-Baden Philharmonic, Andreas Scholl, Basel Chamber Orchestra, Cantus Cölln, Natalie Clein, Basel Chamber Orchestra and Amphion Octet, perform music by Mendelssohn, Haydn, Nikolaus Bruhns, Matthias Weckmann, Schumann, and others.
The historic venues, often dating from the same period as the music performed in them and in some cases with even more specific links, include the Kurhaus in Baden Baden, Church of the Holy Trinity in Speyer, Hambacher Schloss and the Residenzschloss in Mannheim.
The spoken word contributes to the audience’s experience and there are daily talks by musicologist Roderick Swanston and Timothy Blanning, Professor of Modern History at Cambridge.
Launched in 2006, the MS Helvetia II is one of the most modern and comfortable passenger ships on European waters.
Prices range from £2,660 to £4,390 per person and include admission to all seven private concerts, a choice of flights from London, Manchester and Birmingham, accommodation for seven nights on board the river cruiser, all meals including wine, water and coffee, coach travel, talks by a musicologist and historian, interval drinks, all tips, taxes and admission charges, practical and historical information and a detailed programme booklet.

Short Breaks That Wont Break The Bank
December 17, 2008 on 11:01 am | In Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Europe, France, London, Netherlands, Paris, Scotland, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off
Inghams Short Breaks 2009 brochure is your perfect getaway companion for the credit crunch. Sometimes, three days away really can be better than seven. In the current economic climate, short breaks are a great holiday option for anyone flinching at the thought of forking out for a whole week away from home. Inghams, with 18 years of experience in this market has put together a new short breaks brochure that combines adventure with affordability.
Three new European destinations are featured. Innsbruck, the capital of Austria’s Tyrol region, gained plenty of plaudits from visitors when its Tivoli Neu stadium hosted football matches during Euro 2008 and has plenty to offer both architecture buffs and winter sports enthusiasts.
The Belgian university city of Ghent isn’t quite what it seems – at first glance it’s a perfectly preserved medieval treasure, but scratch beneath the surface and there’s all the contemporary subculture you’d expect from a town with a student population of 30,000 and residents including the ultra-hip Soulwax music collective. Lastly, Marseille, France’s second city, is a true melting pot of cultures and offers a tempting combination of sun, sea, gastronomy and history.
Inghams’ Short Breaks 2009 brochure also offers new twists on old favourites. The romance of Paris, 2008’s most popular short break destination, is more affordable now that staying in self-catering luxury apartments is an option; an improved choice of accommodation in Tallinn and St Petersburg features amongst the 62 new hotels listed; and on a seasonal note, there’s a choice of Europe’s finest Christmas markets, with trips to Berlin, Brussels, Prague and Vienna.
In a global financial slowdown, the smartest holidaymakers head where credit is at its crunchiest, and Reykjavik, with its mix of high octane activities, stunning scenery and cool nightlife, is sure to be a firm favourite again in 2009 as Iceland is one of the few countries whose currency has fallen against the pound in recent times. With lower airfares likely as fuel prices fall, there’s never been a better time to head for the land of mountains and geysers.
Prices start from: 2* Hotel Bordeaux, Paris, at £159 pp for two nights B&B including Eurostar from St Pancreas. Ashford or Ebbsfleet. (Travel until 31 March 09)
Accommodation only prices start from:
£27 per person, per night at the Special Category Celal Sultan Hotel sharing a twin or double room on B&B
Mons In New WWI Book
December 17, 2008 on 10:46 am | In Belgium, Books Guidebooks, London, Scotland, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off
The year 2008 sees the 90th anniversary of the liberation of the town of Mons in Belgium. It was close to this small southern Belgian town that the shooting war began for the British Expeditionary Force in August 1914. It was also close to the same town that it ended for them over fifteen hundred days later.
To mark this milestone, a new book by Don Farr “Mons 1914-1918: The Beginning and the End” describes the arrival of the BEF in Mons in 1914, the Battle of Mons itself, the Retreat from Mons, the Battle of Le Cateau, and the background to the Angels of Mons stories. It also describes events on the Western Front through to the German spring offensives of 1918.
Although Mons only briefly played host to the BEF in August 1914, the town nevertheless acquired a special place in the hearts and minds of the BEF and of the British people.
During more than four years of German occupation the people of Mons suffered privation, near starvation, deportations and executions. These are described, drawing heavily on unpublished local sources. The Allied 100 Days Campaign is then outlined culminating in the liberation of the town. A last chapter brings the story of Mons and of the main wartime players up to date. Finally two appendices describe the military and political developments which brought the BEF to Mons on that fateful weekend in August 1914.
A former diplomat, Don Farr published the first of his books on WWI, ‘The Silent General’, a biography of General Sir Henry Horne, in 2007.
Published by Helion & Company “Mons 1914-1918: The Beginning and the End” is now available in major bookshops priced at £19.95 (RRP).
