Finland’s Leading Restaurant Trade Magazine, Viisi Tähteä, Announces 2009 List
Four Michelin-Starred Restaurants, Finnish Ingredients and Innovative Chefs Make Finland a Rising Star in the European Arena
Helsinki, FINLAND - Viisi Tähteä (“Five Stars a leading restaurant trade publication in Finland, has announced their 2009 list of Best Restaurants in Finland, ith the award-winning Chez Dominique leading the way for the fifth straight year (they also appeared on Restaurant Magazine’s highly regarded “World’s 50 Best Restaurantsist in 2008). Another prominent winner gaining international acclaim is Grotesk, featured in a New York Times December article. The restaurants are chosen through surveys of chefs and leading figures in the world of restaurants, the “movers and shakers” as identified by Editor-in-Chief Eeropekka Rislakki.
“Two main trends were clearly visible in the listings” explains Rislakki. “On the one hand professionals respect different classical aspects; on the other, it is only possible to reach the top rankings by questioning and adapting: showing innovativeness, updating the product, and assuming a broad vision of the field.”
Of the top ten restaurants, four have received coveted Michelin-star ratings nd no two are alike. Restaurants earning one star include Demo, noted for its sumptuous food and laidback-yet-energetic atmosphere and started by chefs Teemu Aura and Tommi Tuominen in 2003 (who also own the Grotesk); Carma, whose French cuisine and small, intimate setting make for a romantic atmosphere; and the sweets-oriented Postres, specializing in five-course meals with at least one dessert.
Chez Dominique now has two stars earned for their creative culinary masterpieces based on Nordic and French flavors.
The other restaurants in the top ten are equally diverse, from Savoy hich opened over 70 years ago and continues to serve classic fine dining integrated with raw materials of Finnish cultivation o Kosmos, whose dining room reminiscent of the 1930s is known as a meeting place for artists, writers and TV personalities. G.W. Sundmans, eponymously named for the naval captain whose house it occupies, and Atelié Finne, a spacious Bohemian restaurant located in the former studio of noted Finnish sculptor Gunnar Finne, each combine culture and cuisine in a distinct way. Also included are Olo, whose menu changes with the seasons to incorporate only the freshest ingredients in its food, and Mami, a new restaurant located in Turku’s historic downtown area along the banks of the Aura River.

If you really want to get off-the-beaten-track, why not take to the water on an Expedition Cruise! Adventure travel specialist Tucan Travel has launched a new travel style, Expedition Cruises, with voyages to the Arctic, Patagonia, Galapagos Islands, Amazon and Antarctica.

- Convenient departure dates
- Smaller purpose-built or specially adapted vessels
- High levels of service, experienced crew and expert naturalist guides

“Why choose an Expedition Cruise? It’s simple really. There are parts of the world that can only be accessed by ship, such as the polar regions, and others that are best explored via rivers, like the Amazon rainforest. Places like Patagonia and the Galapagos Islands are absolutely teeming with wildlife, so an Expedition Cruise gives you the best chance to get closer to nature, anaging director Matt Gannan said.
“Forget about casinos, cabaret shows and floating hotels. Our cruises operate on smaller, purpose-built or specially adapted ships that offer high levels of service, excellent facilities and crucially, represent great value for money. Our Expedition Cruises focus on the adventure itself rather than just reaching a destination, so you really get the most out of every minute of your holiday,r Gannan said.
Bookings for these adventure style cruises can be made online, at www.tucantravel.com, or via the reservations department on 020 8896 1600. The cruises are featured on the website and will also be included in the 2010/11 brochure.

Finland Unusual and Eccentric Festivals
April 23, 2009 on 5:48 am | In Estonia, Festivals, Finland, Webbandstand | Comments Off
Finland is promoting less conventional and downright eccentric competitions it hosts throughout the year such as the World Sauna Championships, the World Cell Phone Throwing Championships, Swamp football, air guitar playing, table tapping, wife-carrying and more. About 40 such events are held in total, ranging from the more traditional — hay mowing, for instance, and mölkky, a skittles game — to the more contemporary, such as topless winter jogging.
Wife-carrying is staged at Sonkajärvi in eastern Finland since 1992. This “disciplineates back to the 19th century, if local legend is to be believed. Local villain Herkko Ronkainen used to swing his favorite local girl on his shoulders, an act that will be duplicated by couples competing in the World Championships on July 3 and 4. The World Cell Phone Throwing Championships will be held on Aug. 22 in Punkaharju, eastern Finland. The organizer promises to provide “official WC mobile phones.p>
The 11th Sauna World Championships will be held at Heinola on Aug. 7 and 8. “Competitors have to sit in the sauna with buttocks and thighs on the seat, ccording to the official rules. “Posture must be erect, elbows must stay on the knees and arms have to be in an upright position. The competitor will have to leave the sauna without outside help; otherwise he/she will be disqualified.p>
The Twangy Guitar Festival at the Taarasti art center in Nastola near Lahti takes place on June 27. Air guitar players gather each year at the Club Teatria in Oulu in northern Finland. Would-be Jimi Hendrixes and aspiring Brian Mays congregate to trade licks and strut their stuff, with “training camps, ectures and demonstrations of the “sport,s well as the competition itself. The 2006 winner hailed from Japan, with runners-up from Australia and Germany.
This year’s competition will be held Aug. 19 to 21. Other unusual events and pursuits in Finland include mosquito swatting, milking-stool throwing, table drumming, sitting on an ant’s nest, team berry picking and the kick-sledding competition, among others.
