MOSHI, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania— Locally-owned Zara Tours is not only Tanzania¡¯s largest Kilimanjaro outfitter, but also one of the country¡¯s largest safari operators. In addition to visiting the iconic national parks, Zara also offers the chance to experience the Hadzabe bushmen, the last tribe of hunter-gatherers in East Africa and the cultures of the Maasai tribes. It offers seven unique weekly departures on exciting trips ranging from five to ten days through the Great Rift Valley in the northern part of the country.

The Great Rift Valley stretches 5400 miles from Syria to Mozambique and was created by tectonic forces that created some of the highest mountains and deepest lakes in the world, including Lake Victoria, the second largest in the world. The area is volcanically and seismically active, which produced volcanic Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and the volcanically active Oldoinyo Lengai, as well as numerous hot springs and shallow soda lakes. The area contains a number of national parks that protect wildlife, as well as many archaeological and anthropological discoveries.

Zara¡¯s safaris include the endless plains of the Serengeti, home to a million wildebeest and herbivores such as elephants, rhinos and buffalo, along with their predators. Nearby Ongorongo Crater is the largest unbroken volcanic caldera on Earth, which is a natural enclosure for elephants, cheetahs, lions, leopards, antelopes and the last remaining population of black rhinos in the country. Olduvai Gorge may be the cradle of civilization, as it contains human fossils dating back over 2.5 million years.

Zara owns the Highview Hotel in Karatu Ngorongoro, gateway to the Northern Circuit game parks, set between the northern highlands Forest Reserve of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the surrounding coffee farms. It¡¯s the ideal base for short excursions to Lake Eyasi area, a home to Hadzabe Bushmen, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks.

An essential part of any safari is the chance to stay in a tent, from which one can hear elephants lions and hyenas calling, watch zebras and gazelles grazing and smell the changes in the air as night falls and day breaks. Zara owns safari camps called Tanzania Wildcamps. The two at Serengeti National Park offer easy access to the yearly migration of wildebeests and zebras in the Seronera, Ikoma and Lobo areas, as well as safaris by land or balloon in the Serengeti. The Serengeti Wild Camp and Ikoma Wild Camp offer comfortable safari tents and traditional round huts respectively, each with shower, toilet and two king beds, and a large dining tent.

The Ikoma Wildcamp has the additional advantage of offering a walking safari into the bush country between the Grumeti - Ikorongo Game Reserve and newly-established Ikoma Wildlife Management Area. This is the only opportunity within the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem to see wildlife while on foot and have a bush lunch away from camp. Between August and October guests can observe the migration of over 2 million animals moving between the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti National Park.

A third Wildcamp recently opened at Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a home of Maasai communities, which have lived in harmony with wildlife for thousands of years. This is the place for those who wish to come and discover the secret behind this ongoing coexistence.

Future plans include a Wildcamp in Saadani National Park, where the beach meets the bush; and Selous Game Reserve, the largest protected area on Earth, larger in size than Switzerland or Denmark. Due to its pristine and uninhabited nature, the buffalo, elephant, hippo and crocodile populations are the largest in Africa. The area also boasts over 440 species of birds. Guests at the camp see hippos grazing in front of their tents at night.

There¡¯s a village in Rajasthan, India, where the Thakir (one rung down the nobility ladder from a maharajah) still takes a benevolently feudal responsibility for the well-being of his ¡®subjects¡¯.

He¡¯s developing a range of community-focused tourism experiences that encourage interaction between locals and visitors both inside and outside the gelato-coloured walls of the traditional rural village. Staying in the Thakir¡¯s converted palace is a highlight of the new Gecko¡¯s North India Highlights tour. And for now, there are no other travellers in town.

Getting ¡®under the skin¡¯ of a destination has always been the aim of Gecko¡¯s adventure holidays. The company¡¯s new range of India and Nepal trips aims to foster authentic cultural experiences and as much fun as possible – at rock bottom prices.

The North India Highlights adventure visits the most famous and colourful sites of northern India: Agra and the Taj Mahal; Varanasi - India¡¯s holiest city where pilgrims come to bathe in the Ganges; and the monuments and markets of the ¡®pink city¡¯, Jaipur, where women clad in gem-hued saris barter for handicrafts and foodstuffs.

Travelling by train, local bus, horse-drawn ¡®tonga¡¯, motor rickshaw, bullock dray and on foot, there are detours along the way to Bharatpur bird park and various villages, as well as time in Delhi. The 15-day Northern India Highlights begins and ends in Delhi with twice-monthly departures between October and April. It costs $990 per person, twin share, land only plus a US$250 local payment.

Unique & Stylish Indian Fashion
Delving into the spiritual side of India, the new Spiritual India tour visits the holy city of Haridwar en route to Rishikesh, the ¡®yoga capital of the world¡¯ for three days of yoga practice. An overnight train then takes the group to Varanasi, claimed to be the oldest city in the world. A boat trip past the ghats is a chance to witness ancient rituals of life, death and the cleansing of sins, for which pilgrims come from across the sub-continent.

The 10-day Spiritual India trip begins and ends in Delhi, with time to explore the capital. There are monthly departures between November and April, costing $620 per person, twin share, plus a US$200 local payment.

Travellers can combine India with Nepal, contrasting the desert landscape of Rajasthan with the lofty peaks of the Himalaya on the 14-day Road to Delhi tour. There are weekly departures from Kathmandu between September and December from $990 per person plus a US$250 local payment.

KAMPALA, Uganda—A delicate eco-system remains in post-conflict Uganda and Rwanda as well as lives that depend on that eco-system remaining safe and healthy. Volcanoes Safaris is a unique great ape ecotourism business specializing in mountain gorilla safaris to Uganda and Rwanda, and was founded in 1997.

They have created an unrivalled and integrated set of eco-tourism services that introduce clients to the great apes of Africa and the stunning beauty of this area, while ensuring that this eco-system and the surrounding communities are maintained in a sustainable way. Gorillas are undeniably the most unique primate that survives in the forgotten forests of Africa. Sadly, there are only some seven hundred Mountain Gorillas left on the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. Man poses the most serious threat to the populations of Great Apes in these areas, but something can be finally be done.

Volcanoes Safaris organizes tracking in Bwindi and Mgahinga in Uganda or in Parc National des Volcans in Rwanda, housing guests at unique eco-lodges located in these parks. Visiting gorillas and chimpanzees in these parks helps fund conservation and community projects - schools, roads, clinics, community centers, and helps the people of local communities understand the value of their continued survival. In post-conflict Rwanda, the Volcanoes Safaris BLCF Project, backed by the British government, has helped improve hotel infrastructure, train local people in hospitality and guiding, increase income and develop new skills.

Get Your Sports Gear HereThe project will bring over 1.5 million US dollars to the Rwandese economy. In Uganda, the company will be setting up a partnership project near the Kyambura Gorge chimpanzee sanctuary. The team at Volcanoes Safaris believes that long-term partnerships between ecotourism companies, local communities, conservation organizations, governments and donors are essential for the survival of primates.

London next host of Summer Olympic Games

Great British Heritage Pass - Buy Online

BRITAIN AND LONDON WELCOME THE WORLD AS NEXT HOST OF SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

The UK¡¯s national tourism agency, VisitBritain, and Visit London, the capital¡¯s tourist board, unveil their plans to welcome the world as the host nation and city of the next Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in 2012.

The news comes following Sunday¡¯s official handover ceremony, which marked the start of Britain¡¯s four-year Cultural Olympiad, celebrating the best of the nation¡¯s culture, and the opportunity to present Britain¡¯s appeals to a global audience. For VisitBritain, the handover marked the first stage in its strategy to spread the economic benefits of the Olympic Games throughout the UK and raise the profile and awareness of Britain as a leading tourist destination.

VisitBritain chairman, Christopher Rodrigues said: ¡°This weekend started a four-year, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to position a dynamic, vibrant and welcoming Britain as the best destination in the world. We will remind the nations of the world that Britain is the birthplace of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as sports like rugby, cricket and tennis. We will take the passion that Britain and its visitors hold for football, for sporting events like the Grand National, Wimbledon, the Henley Regatta, the London Marathon and the Great North Run, Wales¡¯ National Eisteddfod and the Braemar Highland Games to reinforce a vibrant image of Britain that appeals to tomorrow¡¯s travellers.¡±

Now that the world¡¯s attention moves from China to Britain, VisitBritain¡¯s global network of offices will promote the nation as the place for watching and participating in sport at all levels, for events and for experiences, attractions and destinations with a unique blend of historical and contemporary culture. Thanks to the Olympic Games in 2012, Britain¡¯s visitor economy could benefit to the tune of an extra £2 billion.

Destinations, venues and local economies around the UK could be set to benefit from hosting Pre-Games Training Camps following the publication of the official online Guide developed by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and VisitBritain. The Guide showcases the quality and variety of more than 600 sporting venues and facilities to National Olympic Committees from all over the world, as well as representatives from International Sports Federations.

London Sightseeing Pass
According to recent VisitBritain research, more than a fifth (22%) of potential visitors strongly agree that they are more likely to want to visit Britain in the next few years because London will host the 2012 Olympics. Tourism gains are expected to come largely from emerging markets inspired by increased media exposure and publicity associated with the Games. Indeed, hosting the Games makes Britain particularly appealing for emerging markets China, India, Malaysia, Mexico and South Korea.

One in ten visits to the UK from overseas – 4.7 million and 14 per cent of the total – involve watching a sporting event or taking part in sporting activities. Although they travel from the other side of the world, visitors from Australia and New Zealand live up to their reputation as ¡®sports mad¡¯ with 28 per cent of New Zealanders and 25 per cent of Australians watching or participating during their stay. Sport is also a way of attracting the attention of visitors from emerging markets where year on year growth often exceeds that from more mature economies. 16 per cent of Brazilians, 15 per cent of Malaysian, 14 per cent of Czech and 13 per cent of Russian visits involve sport – all higher percentages than the French, Germans, Japanese and Italians.

Christopher Rodrigues continued: ¡°Britain is a sporting nation: our reputation has been earned in part by the popularity of our world-renowned events, as well as experiences, accommodation and attractions at destinations in every nation and region. Britain¡¯s Olympic Games in 2012 – and the four years leading to it – are a wonderful opportunity for us to present the character and assets of our destinations and experiences to the world.¡±
