Cadogan Holidays New Summer Collection
December 28, 2008 on 8:13 am | In Adventure Travel, Beachbooker, Croatia, Greece, Italy, London, Outdoors, Portugal, Rome, Sailing, Scuba Diving, United Kingdom | Comments Off
Cadogan Holidays is delighted to announce the launch of its all-new summer 2009 portfolio. With a new company logo, new look, style, pricing guide and layout for the brochure, as well as a wealth of new content in terms of product offering, this launch signals exciting times for the luxury tour operator.
The Cadogan product team has been busy this year, visiting and carefully reviewing all of their hotels, cutting out mid-market product and adding hand-picked premium hotels, experiences and tours. The new Cadogan focus is on the best of the best; on offering properties with a “wow” factor in unique destinations.
The streamlining of the summer 2009 collection has meant that the Cadogan offering as a whole is now more exclusive than it has ever been - only 60% of the original product has remained and 85% of the featured properties are now five star. Furthermore, Cadogan has considerably developed its boutique hotel portfolio with the inclusion of a number of unique, stylish and off-the-beaten track accommodation options for the discerning traveller seeking a more intimate holiday experience.
Doug Mathieson, Head of Product at Cadogan, comments: “Fewer hotels means better contractual relationships with partners and in-resort support. This way, we are also looking after suppliers by providing more volume of business and in return, properties offer better value, more special offers and make sure that all Cadogan’s guests’ needs are looked after in-resort”.
Another significant change in the new brochure is Cadogan’s pricing guide. In order to be as transparent as possible, Cadogan has shied away from using indicative pricing and now quotes package rates including everything but flights. This new “unpackaged package” approach means that up to date flight prices will be available at the time of booking, providing more flexibility for clients.
“We don’t know of any other tour operators offering package prices without flights” says Doug, “I think this is the best way forward in the current climate, ensuring that the customer is given all possible options and that we are always in a position to offer them the best prices and even savings at the time of booking”.
Also new is a quick reference accommodation guide in the opening pages to help clients find the perfect destination for their needs, whether looking for the best hotel for their honeymoon, gourmet dining options, historic or caracter hotels, wellness & spa destinations, quiet retreats, or best properties for city or golfing breaks.
New properties for Cadogan featured in the Summer 09 brochure would be too many to list; however, Cadogan is delighted to announce its expansion into a number of exciting destinations:
• Italy is one of the largest expansion areas this summer with new featured properties in the Italian Lakes (Como, Maggiore and Orta), Liguria (Portofino), Tuscany, The Aeolian Islands (Vulcano) and a city programme including Rome, Florence and Venice.
• Equally amplified is the product in Turkey, which sees the addition of Kemer, Tekirova, Belek, Lara, Side and Antalia, all on the Turkish Riviera, as well as Dalaman and Ölü Deniz on the Aegean coastline.
• The Cadogan Croatia portfolio has also grown considerably for 2009, with the incorporation of the Dubrovnik Riviera (Cavtat) and Split and Hvar on the Dalmatia coast.
• New product in Portugal includes properties in the Estoril Coast, north of Lisbon.
• And new destinations in Greece include the Peloponnese on the mainland and the volcanic island of Santorini, in the Cyclades.
Each destination chapter of the brochure is introduced with expert tips and suggestions on what delicacies to try, what sites to explore or what day trips to take and are followed by a directory of “not to be missed” experiences, ranging from rafting, luxury cruises or jeep safaris, to guided mountain walks or escorted tours of ancient cities - all pre-bookable through the Cadogan Concierge. Before leading into the accommodation listings, Cadogan also details more comprehensive tours and inspiring itineraries for those with a desire to learn, explore, discover and experience more when they travel.

Pulling Cork In Portugal
December 22, 2008 on 10:42 am | In Dine Drink, London, Portugal, Scotland, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off
The BBC’s Natural World recently focused on the wealth of natural history amongst the Cork Oak forests of Portugal’s Alentejo region that produce much of the world’s supply of cork, and in turn support a flourishing eco-system. Join Naturetrek on an 8-day two-centre holiday of botanical and birdwatching explorations from the windswept cliffs, dunes and heaths of the west coast to the marshes and saltpans of the south, and from the Cork Oak forests of the Monchique Hills to the open grass plains and parkland of the Alentejo, departing London 4th and 11th April 2009.
From the initial base in Mertola, with its Roman ruins and spectacular Moorish castle, explore both the flower-studded plains around Casto Verde for avian specialities such as Stone Curlew and numerous Montagu’s Harriers, and then rugged savannah country towards the Spanish border where Black Vulture and Black-bellied Sandgrouse range. Oscillated Lizards, Europe’s largest lizard, are common in the plains around Mertola, and the rivers teem with terrapins and water snakes.
Further highlights include a journey to the spectacular Pulo do Lobo gorge and waterfall, in the Guadiana valley, where Black Stork, Lesser Kestrel and Bonelli’s Eagle breed. The holiday’s second centre overlooks the quiet mountain village of Monchique, a short drive from the highest point in the Algarve.
Here, local Cork Oak forests are host to a wealth of woodland birds including Azure-winged Magpies and a range of colourful butterflies, including Swallowtails and Southern Festoons. Down on the Algarve coast, dunes, heathland, pine woodland and valley farmland provides excellent botanising while local birds include Bee-eaters, Short-toed Eagles,
Nightingales and Red-rumped Swallows. From this base various sites are visited along the coast including the dramatic Cape St Vincent, the southernmost extremity of Europe, and nearby Sagres Point allows the opportunity to enjoy an extraordinary limestone flora, resident Blue Rock Thrushes and Thekla Larks.
The tour costs £1,095 p/p including scheduled flights, pre-paid taxes, 3-nights accommodation in a traditional Pensao in Mertola and 4-nights in a family-run inn Monchique, all meals and wine together with expert guiding.

Mallorca Cookery And Foodie Fun At Hotel L’Avenida
December 19, 2008 on 10:37 am | In Beachbooker, Dine Drink, Hotels, London, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom | Comments Off
New for 2009, Hotel L’Avenida, Mallorca’s chic eight-bedroom boutique hotel in the heart of Soller on the island’s North West coast, is introducing a ‘Flavours of Mallorca’ cookery and foodie weekend throughout February, March and October 2009.
The cookery weekends, based at the converted, century old Modernist style private mansion in the heart of the town, will be run by local chef Benet Vicens, who is the owner of the popular restaurant Bens d’Avall, in the neighbouring town of Deia. During the three-day course, Benet will introduce guests to a wide range of Mallorcan produce, showing them how to use ingredients such as locally caught seafood and lamb from the surrounding Tramuntana Mountains, in a variety of contemporary and innovative dishes.
Over the last few years Bens d’Avall has acquired a reputation for its modern take on traditional Mallorcan dishes and Benet has won much praise across the island for his commitment to protecting local produce, such as the three types of local Mallorcan tomatoes that he helped to cultivate in conjunction with the Botanic Gardens of Soller, in order to save them from extinction and maintain their distinct flavour for the island’s cuisine.
From 12th February 2009, the cookery courses will operate every weekend in February, March and October, with guests arriving on a Thursday and beginning their stay with an informal evening of tapas and local wine tasting at L’Avenida.
After breakfast on the Friday, guests will visit the Macia Batle Bodega at Santa Maria, located in the heart of Mallorca’s traditional wine growing region, for a wine tasting tour before returning to L’Avenida for a light lunch.
On Friday afternoon, Benet will show participants how to make a delicious range of dishes such as a ‘Carpaccio of Soller prawns served with basil and Soller lemon ice cream’, a local fish dish served with fine herb vinaigrette, ‘Lamb with a roasted pepper ‘Tumbet’ and camomile salsa’, plus a choice of desserts. These will then be served to the cookery course participants at a gala dinner in the hotel that evening.
On Saturday morning Benet will accompany guests on a visit to the bustling fruit and vegetable market in Soller in order to select local ingredients for a further practical demonstration of dishes, which will be prepared and served as lunch at Benet’s own country house, with its spectacular views over the surrounding olive groves and countryside. The afternoon is then at leisure to explore the local area, relax by the pool in the courtyard garden at the hotel, or have a pampering aromatherapy massage in the hotel’s spa treatment room.
On the Sunday morning, guests will enjoy a final breakfast at L’Avenida before being presented with a hamper of local Mallorcan produce and an information pack including all the recipes that they have learnt over the weekend.
The ‘Flavours of Mallorca’ cookery weekend costs €1485 per person (approx £1,240 per person) and includes three night’s accommodation based on two people sharing a double room, continental breakfast, all tuition, food and wine relating to the demonstrations (excluding mini bar consumption), gala dinner on Friday night, return airport transfers, transfers to the bodega and the bodega tour. For the cookery weekends to take place, a minimum of six and maximum of 16 people are required. Spa treatments cost from €40 per person.
For further details or to book ‘Flavours of Mallorca’ cookery weekend, call Hotel L’Avenida on 0034 971 634 075 or visit the website www.avenida-hotel.com

All this, combined with a few hours’ sedate cruising each day through some of Europe’s finest scenery, creates an ambience extraordinaire.
There is also a wide range of themed cruises on offer for clients who like to combine a cruise with other activities such as golf, walking, cycling, theatre, opera, wine appreciation, or particular European special events and festivals. Even exclusive Honeymoon Charters are available on barges in Venice, Scotland and the Loire Valley, where just 2 people can charter the entire vessel and enjoy the full services of the crew and tailor-made itineraries.
Rates for six-night/seven-day cruises start from £1,550 per person, whilst whole boat charter rates are from £7,000. The price includes en suite accommodation, champagne welcome, three gourmet meals a day with fine wines; open bar, use of all facilities on board, shore excursions, admittance fees and local transfers.
