Tennis Apparel - 160x600
Madrid, SPAIN – It has been quite a summer for Spain in the sports world. From victories in the Euro Cup to Wimbledon to the Tour de France, Spain has dominated sporting headlines.

Spain has also been busy hosting world class events from the America’s Cup in Valencia last summer, to the upcoming Formula One European Grand Prix on August 24, also in Valencia. Next up, Madrid will host the U.S. team during the Davis Cup World Semifinals, September 19 to 21, 2008.

Over the course of the same days, Argentina and Russia will compete on Argentine soil. The winners of each series will then face off in the finals. In Madrid, the tournament will be held on the red clay court at the 21,000-seat Plaza de Toros Las Ventas. The matches on the first and last days will be held at noon, and at 3:00pm on September 20. Tickets prices for the three day series range from about $201 (€135) to about $574 (€385) (though the €385 range is already sold out). Boxes, seating 6, cost about $17,016 (€12,000.)

For more information and to purchase tickets, go to www.daviscup.com

Started in August 1900 at Boston’s Longwood Cricket Club by Harvard student Dwight Filley Davis, the tournament’s original competitors were the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Now, more than 100 years later, the Davis Cup attracts over 120 participating nations.

The U.S. was the 2007 Davis Cup champion, beating Russia in the US. In 2004, Spain won against the U.S. in Seville, Spain.

So these semifinals, with Spain back on its home turf, should generate a lot of excitement. The players for both teams have yet to be determined.

Sun Sets on Long Haul Air Travel

¡Todos los vuelos baratos a un solo clic!
With the UK economy faltering and oil prices nudging the 150$USD a barrel mark (more than double January 2007) long haul travel is quite simply becoming prohibitive for a large sector of British citizens. It’s time to holiday closer to home.

MALAGA, SPAIN, - With the UK economy faltering and oil prices nudging the 150$USD a barrel mark (more than double January 2007) long haul travel is quite simply becoming prohibitive for a large sector of British citizens. Major airlines are hiking their fuel surcharges to up to 500 for a family of four flying over nine hours and the recently announced EU carbon emissions trading scheme will pass on a further financial burden to the consumer. It’s time to holiday closer to home.

Adam Gale, Managing Director of Costa del Sol based Duchy Estates, comments, “Ironically this is possibly the best news we’ve had to help kick-start the faltering Spanish property market. We know that the majority of Brits still favour a property on the Iberian Peninsula over and above any other destination. Rightmove Overseas has just released figures for the first six months of 2008 and, of the 10 million searches recorded, the largest slice went to Spain with the Costa del Sol topping the list. The problem is that these searches are not converting into sales as people play a waiting game to see firstly how safe their incomes are in the UK and secondly how low house prices are going to dip in both the UK and Spain. But the cost of long haul travel will probably end up making the decision for them and those waiting on the sidelines will flock to start buying in Spain once more.”

Firmly in the short haul bracket (Málaga is around two and a half hours from London) Spain is served by pretty much every no-frills carrier you can think of from even the smallest of UK airports like Norwich and Newquay, and with such fierce competition fares are kept low. At the time of writing Ryanair had single fares between London and Málaga for a pocket monety 10 to include taxes, fees and charges. But getting to Spain isn’t all about the plane.

More Greens...Less Fees - Get Golf Card!
If you prefer to keep your feet closer to the ground it’s surprisingly easy to travel from the UK to Spain by train. In fact, it’s amazing that some people still think you need to fly. Take an afternoon Eurostar from London to Paris in just two hours 20 minutes, then the overnight trainhotel from Paris to Madrid and finish up with the onward AVE train connection to Málaga taking just two and a half hours. Fares are affordable, from 59 return for Eurostar, 51 each way for the trainhotel and 55 for a single on the AVE. Comfortable, convenient and certainly more scenic than acres of sky.

Or if you want to load up the car and soak up the sights consider the Channel Tunnel or ferries to France or perhaps Bilbao and Santander on the northern Spanish coastline and take to the open road. The time it takes will depend on how much of the scenery you wish to take in and how much you wish to put your right foot to the floor.

So, as the sun sets on affordable long haul travel, seek out the sunshine closer to home and save both money and the environment.

Flora And Fauna Of The High Pyrenees

August 20, 2008 on 6:34 am | In Adventure Travel, Cabinweb, France, London, Outdoors, Paris, Scotland, Spain, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off

Click here to buy Discount Footwear online The Pyrenees, the great barrier between France and Spain, rises to over 3,000m and stretches for 450km from the blustery Atlantic to the sun-drenched Mediterranean, offering diverse habitats for an equally diverse flora and fauna. Join Naturetrek on its 8-day French Pyrenees holiday, focusing on birdwatching and botanical walks amongst the spectacular Parc National des Pyrenees on the north-facing French slopes. Departing London 6th September 08.

The north-facing slopes of the Parc National des Pyrenees, situated in the high central region and closer to the Atlantic than the Mediterranean, are wet, green and well forested.

From Pau, transfer to a family-run hotel in the peaceful village of Gedre. Situated at just over 1,000m, and a short drive from the magnificent Cirque de Gavarnie, this is an ideal base from which to explore the full spectrum of Pyrenean habitats during daily walking excursions. The high forests, alpine meadows and spectacular waterfalls of the Cirque de Gavarnie are the initial focus for the holiday. Here, steep slopes, and surrounding high peaks and passes offer fine walking and the best of high Pyrenean birds and flowers.

On the bleak and craggy Port de Gavarnie, perched high on the Spanish border above the canyons of the Ordessa National Park, look for Snowfinch and Alpine Accentor, along with Chamois grazing the upland meadows.

In the valleys, keep watch for Citril Finch, Black Redstart, Chough and Alpine Chough, overhead Golden Eagle, Lammergeier and Griffon Vulture sore, and high cliffs offer possibilities of finding the most elusive of all Pyrenean birds, the Wallcreeper. Next, the tranquil and airy Cirque de Troumouse is a haven for mammals including Marmot, Chamois and Fox, and an excellent hunting ground for birds of prey.

At lower altitudes, small pools, streams and boulder-strewn slopes present a different environment in which to hunt for alpine plants, whilst numerous species of butterfly proliferate in a pesticide-free environment of waterside meadows. Lower still, amongst ancient conifer forests, search for the elusive Black Woodpecker, along with Firecrest and Bonelli’s Warbler – and in the skies above, Booted and Bonelli’s Eagle, Buzzard, Goshawk and Peregrine may all be spotted.
