Follow The Trail Of Angus, Thongs

Hailed the Teen Brit flick of 2008, Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging is about to hit the big screen and showcase Eastbourne to cinema-goers across the globe.

A brand new film location map is being planned to highlight the places in Eastbourne that feature in Paramount Pictures’ summer release. From the huge purple VisitBandstand.com banner at Eastbourne Bandstand to the Chippy on the pier; from the boats at Fisherman’s Green to the seafront’s colourful Carpet Gardens; visitors from around the world will be able to follow the trail of Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging on an exciting new film map.

Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said “I am really excited about the release of Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging and from early reviews, the film is set to be a huge success this summer. It’s even more exciting that the film is actually set in Eastbourne and viewers won’t be able to miss our iconic seafront landmarks. Hot on the heels of this superb film, we are really keen to promote Eastbourne as an upcoming film location and a map will be a great way of attracting interest from visitors and appealing to new film-makers too.”

Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging is the latest film from the Director of Bend it Like Beckham, Gurinder Chadha, and has already attracted promising reviews for its hilarious coming of age story.

Dales Holiday CottagesFilmed in Eastbourne last October, the resort’s famous seafront Carpet Gardens feature in the opening scene of the film as main character Georgia runs along the seafront dressed as an olive!

With references to the town throughout, producers even bought in Eastbourne bins, recycling boxes, and deckchairs to ensure continuity and establish the film’s setting when filming took place outside the town.

Featuring Eastbourne in such a huge way, marketing bosses at Eastbourne Borough Council are keen to use Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging to promote the town’s Film Liaison Unit and market Eastbourne as a film location.

With the resort also being used to shoot scenes from Harry Potter, Notes on a Scandal and TV’s Miss Marple over the past couple of years, Eastbourne is attracting growing interest from top film companies all vying for the seaside resort’s charming setting.

The Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging film location map is being planned to coincide with the release of the film on DVD and will also be available to download online from

The Roundhouse at Fentafriddle, recently licensed as a venue for weddings and civil partnerships.

Couples are now able to marry in surroundings of spectacular isloation at one of North Cornwall’s most luxurious holiday cottages.

With far-reaching views over the craggy north Cornwall coast, the ‘Roundhouse’ at Fentafriddle, near Trebarwith Strand, is a strong contender for one of the most scenic wedding venues in Britain. And being completely enfolded by 50 acres of farmland the property, which has recently been granted a license as a venue for weddings and civil partnerships, offers complete seclusion.

With preparations well advanced for Fentafriddle’s first wedding this September, owners James and Lucy Scott are confident many happy couples will enjoy the attentive service so highly valued by their self-catering guests.

“We have been very careful not to impose a formula for weddings at Fentafriddle, it’s really up to the couple and their families to decide how best to make use of the venue and plan the wedding they really want,” said James Scott.

“Lucy and I are here to help however we can, whether it’s putting the couple in contact with the registrar, arranging marquees, or liasing with caterers. But aside from the legal constraints of a civil marriage ceremony, the couple involved have a free hand in every aspect of the day.”

The ‘Roundhouse’, a stunning circular room which originally housed the farm’s donkey-powered mill wheel, has been licensed as the venue for the ceremony. The room has been tastefully renovated to make the most of the far-reaching views of the coastline and surrounding countryside from its three floor-to-ceiling windows.

The room can be specially prepared for weddings with a rose trellis, registrar’s desk and seating for up to 75 guests. French windows open onto the terrace, from which marquees for the reception can been linked to the room if required, or stand alone in the adjoining garden and paddock.

Dales Holiday CottagesRecently renovated at a cost of over £750,000 Fentafriddle’s three self-catering cottages can accommodate a total of 16 guests in complete comfort, allowing for family members and guests to stay at the property before or after the wedding. Furthermore, the property’s 50 acres of farmland offer ample space for guests to camp or stay in campervans on site.

The newly-installed helipad gives yet more options, whether’s it’s a celebratory flight along the North Cornwall coast, or a glamorous honeymoon departure.

“One couple who are getting married later this year are planning to make the most of the property, with a group of their friends coming down to stay with them here for the weekend before the wedding,” said James. “They will get married on the Monday afternoon, and are then staying on for the rest of the week for their honeymoon.”

Couples interested in booking Fentafriddle for a wedding or civil partnership ceremony should first check availability with James or Lucy Scott, who will then be able to advise them of the appropriate registrar’s office to contact.

The Scotts can arrange the entire day if required, including catering and menus, wine, marquees, accommodation and preparation of the venue.

The Scott’s daughter Emily, who runs The Harbour Restaurant in nearby Port Isaac, can provide catering from canapé parties to table-service dining. Before opening The Harbour, Emily ran a successful outside catering company and can suggest menus, and offer guidance and support throughout every stage of the planning.

A fee is payable to North Cornwall District Council to conduct the ceremony, which must not contain any religious content. It should be noted that the property has to be open to the public on the day of the wedding.

Fentafriddle, Little Fentafriddle and Tremanon are luxury self-catering holiday cottages near Trebarwith Strand on the North Cornwall coast. The accommodation itself is outstanding, blending stylish, contemporary luxury with delightful period character. ‘Fentafriddle’ provides flexible holiday accommodation for up to eight people - ‘Little Fentafriddle’ and ‘Tremanon’ offer comfortable holiday retreats for up to four.

‘Fentafriddle’ has been awarded the top rating by independent inspectors from Visit Britain. New Brunswick Has Jazz Artists, Nova Scotia Presents Celtic Stars

ATLANTIC CANADA,– While there may be a crispness in the autumn air, Atlantic Canada heats up in the fall with two renowned music festivals.

Fredericton in New Brunswick is home to one of Canada’s largest jazz festivals – the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival – this year set for September 9 to 14. The 18th annual edition will feature more than 120 performances, including 40 free shows, held on 23 stages in Fredericton’s historic downtown.

Both well-known and up-and-coming artists from around the world will play electric blues, jazz and funk. Five-time Grammy Award Winner Buddy Guy from Chicago will perform (9/12) as will British pop stars Bloc Party (9/13);

Georgia guitar-wizard Derek Trucks (9/11); Vermont’s promising young rock band Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (9/13); Amsterdam’s Ana Popovic (9/13); France’s Nano (9/11), and Britain’s premier jazz vocalist Sarah Jane Morris performing with Sting’s long-time guitarist, Dominic Miller (9/13.)

Ticket prices range from about $5 to $51 and can be booked on the website: www.harvestjazzandblues.com

Melodic voices and the sounds of pipes and fiddles fill the air in Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island at the Celtic Colours International Festival, October 10 to18. Celebrating the island’s Celtic culture, this world-class event features more than 300 performers in up to seven concerts a day.

The 12th annual edition will focus on Celtic cultures from around the world with artists from Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Cuba and of course, Nova Scotia (or New Scotland, as it was named.) Kicking off the festival will be the Galician musician, Carlos Nuñez on October 10.

Other performers include: Shooglenifty, Archie Fisher, Mairi Smith and the Inverness Gaelic Choir (Scotland); Buddy MacMaster, Ashley MacIssac, J.P. Cormier, Men of the Deeps (Cape Breton); Brock McGuire Band (Ireland), and Gaiteros de La Habana (Cuba), among many others.

The festival wraps up with “Home She’ll Be: a Tribute to Rita MacNeil” on October 18. Venues range from local community halls and a restored 18th century French chapel to new state-of-the-art performance facilities. One of the festival’s most popular features, the Festival Club, offers informal settings for invited artists to jam with colleagues from around the Celtic world. Although the bar closes at 3:00 AM, the music often continues well into the wee hours.

Ticket prices range from $15 to $88 and are available at www.celtic-colours.com

Classic Cars in Scotland this Fall

Dales Holiday CottagesClassic cars and other vehicles head for Culzean Autoclassica in Ayrshire Scotland

CLASSIC and prestigious vehicles from all corners of the UK will gather together at Culzean Castle in South Ayrshire, Scotland for the first Culzean Autoclassica International Concours d’Elegance, which will be held during the 23rd - 24th August bank holiday weekend.

AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND - CLASSIC and prestigious vehicles from all corners of the UK will gather together at Culzean Castle in South Ayrshire, Scotland for the first Culzean Autoclassica International Concours d’Elegance, which will be held during the 23rd - 24th August bank holiday weekend.

“Octane”, the international publication for enthusiasts and owners of classic and supercars, has announced its sponsorship of the event, and competing for its prestigious trophy will be 25 of the country’s top show vehicles, with judging being held in a specially designated area on the lawns surrounding the castle.

To open the concours to the many classic and prestigious vehicles that will be on show, a street concours will be held on the Saturday, with the top three vehicles going forward to join the international event on the Sunday.

Destined to become a five-star event, the Culzean Autoclassica has been created by Autospirit Ltd in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland, and will feature displays from top and significant prestigious marques, single entrants and vehicle clubs.

Veteran, vintage, historic, classic and today’s high performance modern exotic road and racing machines will be represented, and will be joined by product, service providing companies and associated lifestyle exhibitors, all reflecting the heritage of the motorised vehicle.

To celebrate the association with the race days of the 50’s at the disused Turnberry airfield nearby, many of the single vehicle and club entrants will be dressed in the appropriate apparel to reflect the age of their vehicle. For entrants with post 1970s vehicles they will be asked to arrive in period dress of the 40s to 60s.

Visitors to the event are also being invited to join in with the theme and help create a surreal spectacle that will be unique to a classic vehicle gathering in Scotland, and spot prizes will be awarded over the weekend to the best “Retro” dressed entrants and visitors.

Fashion shows, live Jazz and 50s-style bands accompanied by appropriately dressed dancers will also entertain visitors relaxing in the castle’s magnificent courtyard.

With a Soap Box Grand Prix driving challenge, auto art display, vehicle sales enclosure, memorabilia and vehicle auction and auto jumble amongst the many other attractions over the weekend, the Autoclassica promises to be a great day out for all the family.

Sun Sets on Long Haul Air Travel

¡Todos los vuelos baratos a un solo clic!
With the UK economy faltering and oil prices nudging the 150$USD a barrel mark (more than double January 2007) long haul travel is quite simply becoming prohibitive for a large sector of British citizens. It’s time to holiday closer to home.

MALAGA, SPAIN, - With the UK economy faltering and oil prices nudging the 150$USD a barrel mark (more than double January 2007) long haul travel is quite simply becoming prohibitive for a large sector of British citizens. Major airlines are hiking their fuel surcharges to up to 500 for a family of four flying over nine hours and the recently announced EU carbon emissions trading scheme will pass on a further financial burden to the consumer. It’s time to holiday closer to home.

Adam Gale, Managing Director of Costa del Sol based Duchy Estates, comments, “Ironically this is possibly the best news we’ve had to help kick-start the faltering Spanish property market. We know that the majority of Brits still favour a property on the Iberian Peninsula over and above any other destination. Rightmove Overseas has just released figures for the first six months of 2008 and, of the 10 million searches recorded, the largest slice went to Spain with the Costa del Sol topping the list. The problem is that these searches are not converting into sales as people play a waiting game to see firstly how safe their incomes are in the UK and secondly how low house prices are going to dip in both the UK and Spain. But the cost of long haul travel will probably end up making the decision for them and those waiting on the sidelines will flock to start buying in Spain once more.”

Firmly in the short haul bracket (Málaga is around two and a half hours from London) Spain is served by pretty much every no-frills carrier you can think of from even the smallest of UK airports like Norwich and Newquay, and with such fierce competition fares are kept low. At the time of writing Ryanair had single fares between London and Málaga for a pocket monety 10 to include taxes, fees and charges. But getting to Spain isn’t all about the plane.

More Greens...Less Fees - Get Golf Card!
If you prefer to keep your feet closer to the ground it’s surprisingly easy to travel from the UK to Spain by train. In fact, it’s amazing that some people still think you need to fly. Take an afternoon Eurostar from London to Paris in just two hours 20 minutes, then the overnight trainhotel from Paris to Madrid and finish up with the onward AVE train connection to Málaga taking just two and a half hours. Fares are affordable, from 59 return for Eurostar, 51 each way for the trainhotel and 55 for a single on the AVE. Comfortable, convenient and certainly more scenic than acres of sky.

Or if you want to load up the car and soak up the sights consider the Channel Tunnel or ferries to France or perhaps Bilbao and Santander on the northern Spanish coastline and take to the open road. The time it takes will depend on how much of the scenery you wish to take in and how much you wish to put your right foot to the floor.

So, as the sun sets on affordable long haul travel, seek out the sunshine closer to home and save both money and the environment.

The 37th Ryder Cup will take place from 19th to 21st September, with top golf professionals from both continents battling it out in one of the last great sporting events founded on prestige rather than prizes.

England, UK, - Ryder Cup 2008 at Valhalla Golf Club Once again, the biannual Ryder Cup tournament is set to send shivers down the spines of many golf aficionados in both Europe and the United States. The 37th Ryder Cup will take place from 19th to 21st September, with top golf professionals from both continents battling it out in one of the last great sporting events founded on prestige rather than prizes.

With the European Tour golfers having won three consecutive (and five of the last six) Ryder Cups, the US PGA team wants to make sure that it takes full advantage of its home turf. This year’s Ryder Cup will be hosted at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, which previously hosted the Senior PGA Championship in May 2004 and the PGA Club Professional Championship in June 2002. Outside of tournaments, it generally serves as a private golf club, and was designed by professional golfer Jack Nicklaus.

US Team Captain Paul Azinger intends to give his team another slight advantage, announcing a change to alternate shot format, citing past performance of the US team when playing under this format. For the first time in nine years, the opening matches of the Ryder Cup will feature this format, which over the last three matches was replaced with what is known as Four Ball Better-Ball. Azinger has also revamped the method of team selection, using the amount of prize money earned by a golfer in order to determine the top eight golfers, and then manually picking golfers nine to twelve.

Get Your Golf DVDs HereAs for the European team, three time masters winner Nick Faldo is the team captain, and believes that playing on US courses may be to his advantage too. After all, Faldo won Augusta in 1989, 1990 and 1996, and even does commentary for US based ESPN and ABC television networks. The European team will be selected via two qualifying measurements, the World Ranking Points List and the European Tour List.

Regardless of who wins, the 2008 Ryder Cup is expected to be one of the highlights of the sporting year, with millions of viewers in several markets.
