New for 2009, Elite Vacations has combined its Indian Ocean and Middle East and Africa brochures to offer one new 100-page brochure. Commenting on the decision, Elite Vacations’ Managing Director, Peter Jackson* said, “With such a high proportion of our sales tailor-made and many of them two centres, it has become logical to have a one-stop-shop brochure. We are delighted that this streamlining process has also greatly reduced our carbon footprint.”

As in 2008, the new combined brochure is supported by a smaller-format dedicated 44-page Seychelles brochure** which offers greater detail on the operator’s leading destination.

Holiday Extras Airport LoungesIn the combined brochure the UAE continues to dominate the Middle East programme: 13 properties in DUBAI now including the NEW Atlantis the Palm plus a selection of the emerging Emirates with hotels in AJMAN, RAS AL KHAIMAH and FUJAIRAH.

• NEW: The 5 star Al Bustan Palace InterContinental Muscat costs from £1329 per person for five nights, including return flights with Oman Air, private transfers and b&b accommodation.

The operator’s JORDAN programme is similar to 2008 with the popular ‘Jordan Discovery Tour’ visiting Amman, Jerash and Petra and options to further extend in Petra, Dead Sea or Aqaba (Red Sea).

Elite has devoted a full page of its brochure to Middle East two-centre arrangements of ten to 12 nights. Dubai is linked with Muscat, Maldives, Mauritius and Seychelles and Sri Lanka.

• NEW: A 12 night two-centre of Sri Lanka and Dubai leads in for £1595pp including flights with Emirates from Heathrow, eight nights’ b&b at the Taj Exotica in Columbo, Sri Lanka and four nights’ b&b at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai plus private transfers.

For the SEYCHELLES, the operator is offering a total of 45 properties in 2009. Following their success in 2008, the number of Seychelles Secrets - small hotels, guesthouses and self-catering accommodation has been doubled. All these can be found in the dedicated Seychelles brochure, but a selection are in the main brochure along with hotels on the main islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, plus private island resorts including Bird, Denis and the newly refurbished Ste Anne Resort and Spa. A page on recommended island hopping itineraries demonstrates how product can be tailored to accommodate specific requirements.

• LEAD IN for Seychelles in 2009: £899pp for five nights’ b&b at Lazare Picault on Mahé including return flights with Air Seychelles from Heathrow and private transfers. Extra night from £30pp.

• LEAD IN: Seven half-board nights at the 4 star superior Ocean Paradise Resort in Zanzibar costs from £1098 per person including return flights with Kenya Airways from Heathrow via Nairobi and transfers.

WEDDINGS AND HONEYMOONS – Growth in 2008 has prompted Elite to expand the brochure coverage on weddings and honeymoons. The Gift Voucher scheme has proved very popular with honeymooners for reducing their overall cost or for upgrades.

TWO CENTRES - There is a greater emphasis on two centre options this year, and there are a further two pages suggesting popular African and Indian Ocean twin-centres, although different hotels and durations are also available.

SPA - The overall spa offering has been extended in response to the popularity of these properties in 2008, and two pages set out some of the most popular spas featured across a range of destination, and the treatments and products offered in each.

Peter Jackson**, Managing Direction of Elite Vacations, commented, “We continue to offer a cross section of product to appeal to most budgets. Our policy of treating all clients the same, however, means that no matter what the holiday cost our clients receive complimentary lounge passes at the UK airports and private transfers in resort.

Travel A La Carte’s Greece 2009

Boating Made Better 120 x 600
Travel à la carte has been a specialist operator to Greece for almost 30 years, through good times and bad. The key to our longevity? Accommodation of character on a select range of islands and the highest levels of staff service and expertise. We aim to ensure these qualities continue to bring us many more years of success.

The heart of our Greek programme is tiny Paxos, a haven of unchanging tranquillity that lures admirers back year after year. We are mainly in picturesque Loggos, the prettiest and quietest of the coastal villages, with apartments and houses offering enchanting sea views, proximity to beaches and tavernas, and quiet locations in the olive groves. In a new venture for 2009, we are also teaming up with special interest holiday provider Paxos Life Activities, who will be offering a range of courses including journalism, creative writing, painting, photography and theatre, as well as scuba diving and Greek cultural activities. Accommodation rental prices on Paxos start at £202 for a week at an apartment for two in early May.

Symi and Halki, in the eastern Aegean, are two other firm favourites of Travel a la carte’s clients. Cosmopolitan Symi is best known for the beauty of the town’s architecture and the excellence of its restaurants, while Halki town, a huddle of narrow streets almost free of traffic, provides the quietest possible getaway from the pressures of modern life. Both are reached by boat from Rhodes and rental prices start at £470 for a week at Roula studio on Halki in May.

Completing our Greek programme are the Sporades islands in the northern Aegean. Skiathos offers some of the best sandy beaches in the Mediterranean, while neighbours Skopelos and Alonissos, a short hydrofoil journey from Skiathos, are for those seeking a quieter, less tourist-oriented Greece. Rental prices here start at £414 for a studio for two just behind Koukounaries beach on Skiathos.

Top Ski Airports For Winter

January 1, 2009 on 8:59 am | In Airlines, Albania, Andorra, Austria, Cabinweb, Croatia, Czech, Denmark, Estonia, Europe, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, London, Luxwmbourg, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Paris, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Skiing Snowboarding, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Wales, Yugoslavia | Comments Off

Popular Landing Spots For British Skiers & Snowboarders

Leading flight search engine, Skyscanner (www.Skyscanner.net), dips into its data to see where British winter sports enthusiasts are flying to this winter. Despite economic woes, European ski searches appear healthy with a small rise in flight search traffic for ski airports compared to last year. With a strong US dollar, it seems many Brits are avoiding transatlantic mountains and favouring the more local European peaks.

1. Geneva (Switzerland) – at number one by quite a long way it’s Geneva. Close to the French border (the airport even has a French sector), Geneva is an ideal landing zone for skiers and snowboarders, offering the choice of over 100 ski resorts within two hours’ drive. One of the closest is Lelex, a small resort served by 13 ski lifts, ideal for families and beginners, and at the other end of the scale – Morzine, part of Les Portes Du Soleil ski area, a huge interlinked domaine offering some 650 different pistes, served by over 200 ski lifts.

2. Nice (France) – located for good access to the ski resorts of the Southern French Alps and the Italian Alps, Nice offers access to 12 ski resorts within 3 hours’ drive. Isola 2000 is one of the best in range, rising to 2610m, offering about 50 pistes and around 120km of downhill skiing and snowboarding. Alba, about 2.5 hours from Nice is an ideal choice for beginners, a compact area which is also good for cross country skiing, boasting 52km of Nordic trails.

Neilson's Luxury Super Service Chalet
3. Salzburg (Austria) – located in the north of the country, Salzburg is surrounded by over 100 resorts to the south, east and west, all of which are less than 2 hours drive from the airport. Mayrhofen is one of the most famous in the area and one of the highest resorts in Austria; part of the Zillertal ski area, it offers access to 130 pistes. If you’re looking for a family ski area and need something with shorter drive times, try St Wolfgang – one of the closest ski areas to Salzburg, this small resort has 9 ski lifts as well as 30km of cross country trials.

4. Munich (Germany) – another good access point with almost 100 ski resorts within 2 hours of the airport. Choose from a great selection of Northern Austrian resorts, or for something a little different, why not visit a German ski resort? Though little known as a skiing destination, Germany has some great options; Sankt Englmar is a small ski area best suited to beginners and young families in the east of Germany – or try Grainau – one of the bigger resorts in Germany offering an impressive vertical drop of over 2000m and 44 pistes.

5. Grenoble (France) – there are over 50 ski resorts within 1.5 hours of the airport, including some of the biggest and best such as Alp d’Huez, Courchevel, La Grave, Meribel and Valmorel. For somewhere a little more secret, try Autrans - a quieter area with 16 lifts and about 18km of downhill slopes as well as 160km of cross country ski trails.

Best of the Rest:

Toulouse (France) – offers access to Pyrenean ski resorts in France, Spain and Andorra. Pas de la Casa is a firm favourite with the Brits, renowned for its excellent value and lively après ski action.

Innsbruck (Austria) – great for getting to resorts in the Tyrol region and the city of Innsbruck itself is home to Nordkette, a small ski area with slopes overlooking the city, which boasts one of the steepest runs in Europe.

Milan Bergamo (Italy) – good for Northern Italian resorts. Try Livigno, a duty free ski resort with an excellent terrain park and good off piste options, a quaint alpine town untouched by overdevelopment.

Guide To The Wines Of England And Wales

January 1, 2009 on 8:24 am | In Dine Drink, London, Night Clubs, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off

Sample PagesEnglish and Welsh wine enthusiasts are in for a treat. A Guide to the Wines of England & Wales has just been published and is now available in all good bookshops and on line retailers. Packed with up to date information and a wealth of illustrations, this new book provides a topical and unique insight in to the English and Welsh wine industry.

A Guide to the Wines of England & Wales is compiled by the award-winning Wine behind the label team whose books have scooped all three of the major wine-writing awards in the UK. This is the first of their series of regional wine guides, researched in-depth to give a fully comprehensive overview of the industry. Over 100 vineyards are captured in full colour, packed with essential facts and background information, including their location, a profile of their leading wines with tasting notes and interviews with the vineyard owners themselves. For the first time ever there is a section devoted to the industry’s leading winemakers, with profiles on each, which provides even greater insight into the state of play of the vineyards and their regions.

The book opens with an historical perspective and asks if wine was produced here by the Romans or only imported. The intervening centuries also have an interesting story to tell.

An erudite essay by Richard Selley, Emeritus Professor of Geology at Imperial College, London, charts the impact of climate change on viticulture. Richard is an acknowledged expert and author on the geology of English winelands.

There is a buzz around wine production in England and Wales with much interest and focus on climate change and its implications for the 200 plus vineyards. Rumour has it that imminent overseas investment will also be providing a Renaissance to our own wine industry.
