World Traveler
Conclusion of £18 Million Enhancement of Orchard Road Heralded
With Lush Greenery, Ambient Lighting and Shiny Facades

Singapore’s standing as one of Asia’s most popular cities for shopping, dining and entertainment has been reaffirmed with the completion of its S$40 million (£18 million) Orchard Road rejuvenation programme. Commenced in April 2008, the revitalisation scheme encompasses the installation of atmospheric street up-lighting, urban furniture and outdoor ‘green rooms’ for street events. This rejuvenation programme is part of Singapore’s long-term urban renewal plan where Orchard Road is being transformed into one of the world’s most spectacular boulevards with S$1.6 billion (£.7 billion) invested by the city’s private and public sectors.

Gleaming new facades of existing shopping malls house a variety of local and international brands and is just the beginning of this exciting new look. New retail space offering cutting edge shopping concepts will be added with the opening of three new malls in 2009, namely ION Orchard, Somerset Central and Orchard Central including a 218-metre tall skyscraper with a 360-degree public observation deck. Ambient illumination lights up sleek new glass panels each etched with themes of fruit, flowers and the forest or the history of Orchard Road itself. Floral totems have been installed and new public spaces have been created in the form of ‘green rooms’ - impromptu open-air stages for urban events.

Orchard Road, Singapore’s most popular free attraction and one of the world’s top shopping boulevards, is already firmly established as an international magnet for shopaholics and leisure visitors, attracting over seven million visitors each year with its dazzling range of quality products and services to suit all budgets, plus a host of dining options, themed events and entertainment. It is home to over 100 shops and boutiques. Several international labels have also opened new flagships in the area, including Cartier and Coach, luxury timepiece brands Franck Muller and Richard Mille, designer shoe icons Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo, jewellers Van Cleef & Arpels, and fashion labels Stella McCartney, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Banana Republic.

Boosting Singapore’s reputation as a shoppers’ paradise, the Great Singapore Sale annual event will be held this year from 29th May to 26th July with almost everything and anything on sale from bargains in IT, apparel and luxury goods, to spas, beauty treatments and tourist attractions (www.greatsingaporesale.com.sg) . Augmenting this popular annual event is the recent launch of “2009 Reasons to Enjoy Singapore”; a campaign initiated by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) comprising local and global promotions and value-for-money offers aimed at boosting retail revenues and visitor arrivals to the city.

Says the STB’s Area Director for Northern and Western Europe, Divya Panickar: “STB has been working hard with industry partners to develop new initiatives and promotions throughout the year. This includes the Late Night Shopping initiative with participating malls offering visitors an enhanced shopping experience incorporating live music and outdoor performances on top of the special retail and food and beverage deals. More than ever, Orchard Road is a vibrant, trendy and exciting destination in its own right offering a diverse range of shopping options with activities and events to suit everyone.”

The New Newburgh Quarter - London W1

March 27, 2009 on 8:45 am | In Dine Drink, Fashions, Hotels, London, Night Clubs, Shopping, United Kingdom | Comments Off

Diversity, Originality and the Unexpected- the three elements you can uncover at London’s exciting Newburgh Quarter, to the East of internationally revered Carnaby. Mixing fashion, lifestyle and entertainment, this historic segment of the Capital is also on-trend and fashion-forward appealing to those who demand something different.

Rich in heritage, Newburgh Quarter has real character with its 17th Century cobbled streets, unique tall and narrow buildings- once Central London dwellings and was even a plague pit in the 1600’s. The Victorian craze for bath and wash houses saw the establishment of the infamous Marshall Street Baths (re-opening in 2010), a stone’s throw from where William Blake was born.

The vision of today’s Newburgh Quarter is clear- the remit to reflect the best of contemporary British and International talent in fashion, jewellery and accessories creating a sense of uniqueness and an exciting shopping adventure. Celebrity fans of the Newburgh Quarter include Matthew Williamson, Alex Turner, Fat Boy Slim, Pink, Brad Pitt, Kate Moss, Sadie Frost and Peaches Geldof.

It is a winning combination.

Add to this the fact that the Newburgh Quarter is in the West End, in the heart of the bustling centre and yet an enclave of its own, the very antithesis of the humdrum high street. It’s an added feature with so many owner- makers often working in and from their boutiques; the shopper often receives very personal attention from bespoke services to spirited advice.

Flying to Milan is fashionable

February 23, 2009 on 11:05 am | In Africa, Asia, Bahrain, Dubai, Fashions, Italy, Middle East, Rome, Thailand | Comments Off

Emirates is again demonstrating it’s a cut above the rest by announcing it double up on flights to the Italian fashion centre of Milan.
Currently, the airline flies twice daily from Dubai to Milan’s Malpensa International Airport, weaving yet more services into its European network.

The flight EK 419 departs Suvarnabhumi Airport at 0225hrs, and connects with the flight EK 093 which leaves Dubai at 0905hrs and arrives in Milan at 1245hrs or connect with the gliht EK 091 which departs Dubai at 1600hrs and lands in Milan at 1940hrs.

Nabil Sultan, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Europe, said: “This has been a very good time for our passengers travelling in and out of Italy from across our network. First, there was Venice and the opening up of the Italian north east, then we gave better access to Milan and Rome, making them non-stop daily to and from Dubai, and now we’re stepping up flights to Milan.

We are truly committed to the Italian market and this latest development very much shows that.”
Emirates has been flying to Milan since 2000, and in addition to Dubai, most passengers travel there from cities including Manila, Colombo, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Johannesburg and Bombay.

Passengers travelling in the other direction mostly head for Dubai, Colombo, the Maldives, Mauritius, Dhaka, Bangkok and the Seychelles.

The extra frequency and improved connections in Dubai will ease travel to Africa, China and Australasia.

The route is supported by a combination of three class configuration Airbus A330-200 and Boeing 777 aircraft, the latest of which carry the industry leading ice entertainment system.

Mr Sultan added: “On the back of this double daily flight, we also expect a further increase in cargo trade and that’s great news for importers, exporters and the business community in general. Italy is already a major trading partner for the UAE and Emirates is glad to support that through Emirates SkyCargo.”

Designer fashion goods, cars and car parts are among the items carried by SkyCargo out of Milan, much of which go to the Middle East, Far East and Australia.
Inbound consignments include mainstream fashion garments, fruits, vegetables and fresh fish with key source markets being the Subcontinent and the Far East.

With the second flight to the strongest Italian freight market destination, overall SkyCargo capacity will leap to nearly 600 tonnes, including the weekly Boeing 747 Freighter service. Milan is also a major financial, business and design centre.

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - Visitors find a rising tide of growth and development at one of America’s top beach destinations — Panama City Beach, Fla. Long known for its emerald-green waters and white sandy shores, the destination beckons today with an array of new offerings to satisfy every member of the family. Construction is progressing ahead of schedule on the new Panama City - Bay County International Airport, on track to open in May 2010. The eco-conscious terminal is designed with the goal of being the nation’s first to achieve LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The new international airport will offer a 10,000-foot runway, the only one of this length in Northwest Florida.

With longer runways, it will accommodate larger jets as well as commercial aircraft of any size and improve the region’s overall air service. “Travelers can look forward to better service and more competitive fares, as Panama City Beach becomes easily accessible from major domestic and international markets,” says Dan Rowe, president and CEO of the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau. Once here, visitors will find plenty to do.

This Northwest Florida destination is home to a TripAdvisor’s® 2008 Top Two beach in America: St. Andrews State Recreation Area, cited for its pristine waters and shores.

Other offerings from which to choose include family-friendly events and attractions as well as vibrant, new shopping/ dining/entertainment venues. New accommodations are plentiful too. Room inventory is expected to climb to 21,400 this year, with the opening of beachfront resorts and high-rise condominiums offering breathtaking views of the Gulf of Mexico.

Eco-Friendly Airport When the Panama City - Bay County International Airport makes its debut early next year, it is expected to be the first airport to open in the U.S. since Sept. 11, 2001. Located on Panama City Beach’s expansive West Bay, the airport is being developed on 1,300 acres of a 4,000-acre site donated by The St. Joe Company. The Panama City - Bay County Airport and Industrial District Authority aims to make its terminal the first in the nation certified to LEED standards under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Additionally, the terminal will showcase Panama City Beach’s natural beauty with an interior courtyard and soaring, glass window walls to bring views of nature indoors.

The airport will be developed in conjunction with a nature preserve that will include Florida’s largest expanse of undeveloped coastline.

The refuge, called the West Bay Preservation Area, will protect 40,000 acres around the West Bay, including 33 miles of undeveloped shoreline and an additional 44 miles of tributaries and creeks. It will provide permanent protection for the area’s water quality, biodiversity and natural beauty. Travelers and locals here will enjoy large expanses for hiking, fishing and bird watching. Panama City Beach’s natural wonders will be easily accessible soon via the new airport.

With runways and buildings taking shape more than three months ahead of schedule, airport construction passed the 45 percent completion point in January 2009,
