Universal Studios Hollywood is developing “Despicable Me Minion Mayhem,” a 3D, “ultra-HD” movie motion-simulator attraction based on the animated film “Despicable Me,” which is slated to open in 2014. The Hollywood attraction will modeled after the one in its sister park, Universal Orlando Resort, with the addition of a few surprises unique to Los Angeles.

The fully immersive ride will feature the film’s characters, including super-villain Gru, the three orphan girls (Margo, Edith and Agnes), and the Minions. The ride also will feature sight gags, special effects and 3D digital animation. The exterior treatment will feature thematic touches such as whimsically themed queues, preshow videos and comedic dialogue that set up the fundamental plot: Gru schemes to create more mischievous Minions from human recruits.

Guests will be transported into Gru’s house and encounter visual elements as seen in the film, including the moon-shrinking SR-6 shrink ray. They go through a Minion training mission while wearing 3D Minion goggles. A post-show dance party features Minion walk-around characters.

Orient—Express Hotels’ El Encanto hotel has reopenedin Santa Barbara, Calif., following a major renovation. The property, which has been known as a hideaway for the rich and famous for 100 years, is set on seven acres of landscaped gardens. It is now fully restored and consists of 92 individually designed, California-style bungalows, with hardwood floors, plantation-style shutters and bespoke accessories. Orient-Express worked closely with Santa Barbara’s Historic Landmarks Commission to ensure that the main footprint of the hotel remained true to its original design.

Each bungalow has a private patio or garden, where guests can dine al fresco. Each terrace features a telescope and a panoramic view of the ocean. The 800-square-foot Hummingbird Bungalow also features an outdoor rainforest shower.

The hotel’s terraced gardens have pathways and streams, as well as citrus trees and a lily pond. Art throughout the hotel reflects Santa Barbara’s landscape.

The hotel’s dining room is overseen by Executive Chef Patrice Martineau and features “Californian coastal” cuisine with locally grown, seasonal produce, as well as freshly picked herbs and vegetables from the hotel’s Chef’s Garden. The hotel also has its own Holstein cow, Ellie, whose milk is solely used to produce handmade cheese for the property. The El Cantato also offers its own brand of freshly roasted coffee, as well as wine and home-brewed, unpasteurized beer.

The El Cantato’s spa offers seven treatment rooms, including a couples room and wet room. Therapies feature sea elements, such as seaweed from Patagonia, or vinotherapies, which offer healing properties extracted from regional vines.

The hotel also offers a fleet of custom-made electric bikes, each with a basket that can hold a picnic lunch prepared by El Encanto chefs.

Nightly room rates start at $525, including tax, for a Superior Bungalow. The property also offers the Enchanted Upgrade package, which offers a one-category upgrade at the time of booking for bookings made through May 31, excluding Memorial Day weekend (May 25-27).
