GROUSE GENES DON’T LIE

REI Outlet has big savings on great gear
Many Montanans are devoted to the blue grouse. Some have enjoyed memorable hunting experiences, while others recall Sunday meals around a cast iron roaster of savory grouse breasts smothered in mushroom gravy.

Now there is some surprising “news.” Blue grouse are no longer blue, they’ve been renamed “dusky grouse.” That’s right—their name has officially changed.
The decision isn’t actually news. In 2006, the American Ornithologists’ Union’s committee on classification and nomenclature announced that the genus Dendragapus is made up of two species. New DNA evidence published in 2004 showed that the grouse of the Rocky Mountains and those of the Pacific Coast Ranges and Sierra Nevada inhabit separate, isolated habitats with no gene flow between the two populations. As a result, dusky and sooty grouse have genetically diverged from each other. Today we have the dusky grouse of the Rocky Mountains and the sooty grouse of the California and Sierra Nevada mountains.

A possible third population is in the making as a result of a divergence, notable on a DNA level, between the northern and southern dusky or blue grouse populations.

It is satisfying to see DNA-based research agree, in this case, on an earlier generation’s careful observations. Bird specialists first backed splitting the two grouse populations in 1931, then quickly reversed the decision amid noisy controversy.

They had made their case on observable differences between the grouse of the Rocky Mountains and birds further west. However, it was the ability, in this decade, to take the bird apart down to its DNA that finally carried the day.

Some of the observable differences between the sooty and dusky grouse include the bare skin patches that show on males. The patches are yellow on the sooty grouse and tend to be red in the dusky grouse. Sooty and dusky grouse also differ in the presence or absence of a distinct tail band, and in the color of their downy young, their mating calls and other courtship behaviors.

While the name dusky grouse doesn’t conjure a mountain setting the way the name blue grouse does, the mountains are their home. They feed on the needles of coniferous trees in the winter and are found in regions with high elevation forests intermixed with open meadows. Dusky or blue grouse don’t migrate long distances either. Their movement tends to be from one altitude to another, between summering and wintering habitats.
Because of new technology now available for DNA analysis, reclassification of entire genera, tribes, subfamilies and even families will become more frequent, scientists say. Despite this work, the blue grouse will probably carry that name in Montana for years to come.

There is power in a name. For many of us, when a blue grouse appears in autumn’s brassy, cured grasses, it awakens feelings and memories that only those two words can express.

Big Game Licenses Available Online

September 14, 2008 on 8:44 am | In Cabinweb, Chicago, Great Lakes, Midwest, Outdoors, Plains States, Rockies | Comments Off

Big game license for mentored hunters are now available through the S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department Web site.

The big game licenses allow mentored youth to hunt antlerless deer, antelope and turkey. Available to resident mentors for a $5 fee, the licenses are valid during the youth deer season, the archery and firearms antelope seasons and the fall turkey season.

The last session of the S.D. Legislature passed a law that allows children as young as 10 years of age to take part in mentored hunts. The availability of mentored hunting licenses for three big game seasons is just the latest step in providing more hunting opportunities for young people.

License applications may be submitted through the Web site at www.sdgfp.info or by printing out a paper application available on the site and through license dealers. To apply by computer, on the GFP home page hold the cursor over “Licenses and Reservations” and then click on “Limited Issue Licenses.” Then follow the instructions to complete and submit the application. A credit card is needed for making the payment online.

The purchase of a mentored hunting license does not affect the eligibility of the parent or guardian to purchase a license in other deer, antelope or turkey seasons. “However,” said GFP Licensing Office Supervisor Scott Simpson, “the purchase of such a license renders the mentored youth hunter ineligible to purchase regular licenses for the youth deer, antelope or fall turkey hunting seasons.”

With the first mentored hunts set to take place this fall, the Game, Fish and Parks Department is anticipating plenty of interest and plenty of questions.

“The Resident Mentored Hunting pamphlet available online is a good source of information about the requirements and restrictions governing these hunts,” said GFP Licensing Office Supervisor Scott Simpson. “Even if a mentor applies for the licenses online, printing out the pamphlet and keeping it on hand is still a good idea.”

Other online sources of information can be found by clicking on “Mentored Hunting” under the “What’s New” tab on the home page of the GFP Web site. The information there includes regulations governing young hunters and mentors as they take part in small game and big game seasons and frequently asked questions.

Federal Duck Stamps from ALIS license vendors

September 14, 2008 on 8:12 am | In Cabinweb, Chicago, Great Lakes, Midwest, Outdoors, Plains States | Comments Off

MADISON, Wisconsin– Waterfowl hunters can now purchase their Federal Duck Stamp from any one of more than 1,300 Wisconsin hunting and fishing license sales locations beginning with 2008 hunting season. Wisconsin is one of nine states selected by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to pilot a new method of purchasing a Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, commonly known as a Federal Duck Stamp.

Hunters who purchase their Federal Duck Stamp at a Wisconsin hunting and fishing licensing sales location will receive a document verifying their stamp purchase that will be valid for 45 days. This proof of purchase will fulfill the requirement for waterfowl hunters to possess the stamp and allows free entrance into any National Wildlife Refuge. The actual stamp will be mailed to the purchaser within 45 days.

“This new service will make it possible for hunters to purchase all the necessary licenses, permits and stamps needed for waterfowl hunting in one stop,” said Kevin Huggins, section chief of the DNR licensing section.

The cost of the Federal Duck Stamp is $17.50, which includes a $2.50 service charge. Federal Duck Stamps will only be available over the counter at license sales locations, initially. Stamps will become available on Wisconsin’s Internet and telephone sales site in the near future.

Every waterfowl hunter over the age of 16 is required to buy a Federal Duck Stamp in order to hunt waterfowl, in addition to any state license, permit or stamp requirements. Many non-hunters also purchase stamps for collecting purposes and to support waterfowl habitat and waterfowl conservation efforts. Funds from duck stamp revenue assists with the development and maintenance of wetland habitats that benefit waterfowl and many other species of wetland wildlife.

Heritage of Playboy Jazz on the High Seas

Herbie Hancock and Marcus Miller lead all star line-up for first ever Playboy Jazz Cruise

Jazz Cruises, LLC today announced an international lineup of stars for a worldwide audience on the inaugural sailing of the Playboy Jazz Cruise. This full-ship charter is hosted by legendary jazz great Marcus Miller, with special guest Herbie Hancock, along with a line-up of the world’s most vibrant and celebrated jazz superstars. While “Playboy” is in the name, this is all about the music, musicians and jazz heritage that Playboy has fostered for nearly 50 years. From “Playboy after Dark,” to the now 30-year-old Playboy Jazz Festival, this excursion will be fueled by rhythm, heart, soul and sound.

Unlike traditional concerts, this cruise is the ultimate in experiential jazz immersion. Performers do not walk on stage, perform a set and disappear; there is genuine involvement with the artists, from late-night jam sessions, dining together, casual conversation, autograph sessions, and of course, the performances. “The people who come on these kinds of cruises love music, they are so crazy about music,” says Marcus Miller. “After you play, you’re talking with people and it becomes a family – we love it.”

Joining Miller and Hancock on the week-long cruise will be vocalist Dianne Reeves, considered one of the pre-eminent female jazz vocalists in the world. Festival favorite, blues guitarist and singer songwriter Keb’ Mo’, will bring his distinct brand of blues to the mix. And jazz storyteller Poncho Sanchez, leader of the most popular Latin jazz group in the world, will bring the crowd to their feet with his eclectic Afro-Cuban bebop rhythms.

One of the most enduring figures in modern jazz, master saxophonist James Moody will also perform, as will premier trumpeter Roy Hargrove, saxophone virtuoso James Carter, and dazzling young jazz pianist Eldar. Rounding out the expansive lineup is vocalist Roberta Gambarini and the New Birth Brass Band hailing from New Orleans.

“Our hallmark is creating a total environment for the production and enjoyment of the music. When you combine that with legendary performances, the luxury of a first-class ship, the exotic and exciting ports of call, and the thrill of sharing the passion of the jazz experience with fellow enthusiasts, the result is a vacation unlike any other,” says Michael Lazaroff, Executive Director of Jazz Cruises LLC. “I think Dianne Reeves best described the experience when she said that it’s going to be magical.”
