Celebrate almost 50 years of Ullr Fest and 150 years of Breckenridge

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo.—Since 1963, the town of Breckenridge has credited its epic winter conditions to the powers of Ullr, the Norse god of snow. Each year, snow-worshipers dust off their Viking horns and line the streets of Breckenridge to pay homage to Ullr - and every year he rewards the 150-year-old town and the nation’s most popular ski resort with nearly 300 inches of powder.

Ullr Fest is an annual wacky winter festival like no other, and it is taking place January 4-9, 2009. During Ullr Fest in Breckenridge, don’t be surprised to see horned Viking hats adorning the heads of skiers and snowboarders, Ullympic competitors flinging frying pans for prizes, more than 12,000 Ullr enthusiasts filling the streets for the Ullr Parade and crazy float participants skiing off jumps on Main Street or gliding along town in a hot tub.

This year’s Ullr Fest will be bigger and better than ever as it coincides with the celebration of Breckenridge’s 150th anniversary. Ullr festivities include:

Celebrate winter during the 19th Annual Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo.—Experience the visual grace of the creation and exhibition of fleeting art. The Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships return to Breckenridge for the 19th year from January 20-25, 2009 at the Riverwalk Center, located in the heart of Breckenridge between Main Street and Park Avenue.

For the 2009 event, 16 teams from around the globe have been invited to compete from nine countries including Bulgaria, Canada, China, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the USA. Snow Sculpting is attended annually by more than 30,000 people of all ages from across America and the world and has been named by USA Today as “one of the top 10 ways to celebrate winter.”

Each year, four-person teams are assigned 12-foot-tall, 20-ton blocks of machine-made snow. These teams work within a five-day period to create sensational sculptures. From these blocks of snow, the teams often create enormous pieces of whimsy, although some deliver powerful political or social commentary. Some sculptures are even interactive and allow spectators to experience the tactile as well as visual grace of the fleeting exhibit.

The finished pieces are achieved after a total of 65 intense hours of work without the use of power tools, internal support structures or colorants – just the ingenuity of man and a medium that lends itself, if only temporarily, to the persuasion of chisels, saws, chicken wire and even carrot scrapers.

When the sculptures are finished, a panel of well-known artists and patrons of the arts serve as judges and present awards to the first, second and third place sculptures. Awards are also given for People’s Choice, Kids’ Choice and Artists’ Choice. There are no cash prizes; the artists instead revel in the reward of hard work, forged friendships, freedom of artistic expression and the satisfaction of long hours of preparation that lead to the event.

Those coming to Breckenridge during Snow Sculpture week should be sure to check-out Breckenridge’s world-class ski resort. Book three nights of lodging and three days of adult lift tickets and receive FREE an additional night of lodging and an additional day of adult skiing. Participation may vary. Package valid January 11 through March 14, 2009.

Call Breckenridge Central Reservations at 877-593-5260 or visit www.gobreck.com for more information on the Budweiser Select International Snow Sculpture Championships and January lodging packages. Editor’s Note:

Delta Full Flat Beds on U.S.-Heathrow Routes

October 20, 2008 on 9:30 am | In Airlines, California, Chicago, East Coast, Florida, Great Lakes, London, Los Angeles, Miami, Midwest, New England, New York City, Orlando, Pacific Northwest, Plains States, Rockies, San Diego, San Francisco, Southwest, Texas, The South, United Kingdom | Comments Off

Delta Air Lines customers flying business class between the U.S. and London’s Heathrow Airport will enjoy the comfort of a 180-degree full flat bed on every flight beginning summer 2009. Delta customers also will have the convenience of a third daily nonstop flight between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and London-Heathrow, operated by joint venture partner Air France. The service will complement Delta’s two existing flights between New York and Heathrow and one flight between Atlanta and Heathrow and will give customers the scheduling flexibility of a morning, early evening or late evening departure. “The introduction of full-flat service onboard the Delta 767 fleet will enhance our position in the highly competitive U.S.-to-Heathrow market,” said Glen Hauenstein, Delta’s executive vice president-network planning and revenue management.

Effective summer 2009, Delta’s flights between the United States and Heathrow will be upgraded to feature Boeing 767-400ER aircraft with 40 new 180-degree full flat beds in the aircraft’s BusinessElite cabin. The seats, designed by Thompson Aerospace and engineered and manufactured by Contour Premium Aircraft Seating, recline to 77-inch-long beds in a one-two-one configuration giving every BusinessElite customer direct aisle access.

Delta is reconfiguring seven of its 767-400 aircraft with the full-flat beds.

In total, Delta and Air France plan to offer customers four daily nonstop flights between the United States and London-Heathrow next summer – one from Atlanta and three from New York-JFK. Delta also currently offers service between London’s Gatwick Airport and Atlanta twice daily and between London-Gatwick and Cincinnati once daily. Air France has announced that it intends to discontinue service between Los Angeles and Heathrow as it adds the new nonstop Heathrow flight from New York.
