As the desire for authentic and experiential travel continues to rise, top cruise lines are meeting this demand with new, unique offerings. With American Express Travel citing the Mediterranean, Alaska and Europe as top cruise destinations this summer, here’s what travelers should check out for the upcoming summer cruise season:
MEDITERRANEAN WELLNESS–Recognizing the boom in the wellness tourism sector, Regent Seven Seas Cruises will debut Seven Seas Wellness, a new program in collaboration with Canyon Ranch SpaClub on Mediterranean summer sailings aboard Seven Seas Voyager. The program pairs a new collection of wellness-themed excursions with a curated selection of rejuvenating, signature Canyon Ranch SpaClub services; providing guests the opportunity to create their own invigorating and individualized wellness program. Excursions range from Tai Chi in Marseilles, France to bathing in the restorative hydrothermal pools of the Stufe di Nerone Baths it Sorrento and Nordic walking in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
NATURE IN ALASKA– Launching in June, the new Lindbald Quest ship in concert with National Geographic, a 100-passenger vessel will ply the waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage and bring travelers back to nature. The ship is specifically designed for nature and wildlife viewing, offering several sundecks, a fleet of 24 sea kayaks, paddle boards and specially-designed landing craft and include remotely-operated vehicles (ROV), a video microscope and a hydrophone and bow-cam designed to hear and film humpback whale vocalizations and witness bow-riding dolphins. The ship also carries complete warm- and cold-water diving gear and underwater cameras so that an onboard expert can bring back underwater images.
MILLENNIAL RIVER CRUISING THROUGH EUROPE– Travelers looking for intimate and immersive adventures have precipitated the growth in river cruising – especially within the millennial demographic. Just in time for summer, Uniworld launched a new river cruise brand called U aimed at creating a cool on-board vibe and authentic local experiences in some of Europe’s biggest cities to attract millennials. Highlights include a welcome party, a DJ party, 13 land excursions and on-board wine-tasting.
