Historic Bank is Transformed into Boutique Hotel, Providing a Dramatic Backdrop for Luxury Rooms and World-class Restaurants & Bars
Bank Hotel, a signature hotel from Stockholm’s legendary hospitality group,Stureplansgruppen, opens its doors on August 22, 2018. The exclusive boutique hotel on Nybroviken Quay is in the heart of the capital’s shopping, culture and entertainment district, with sweeping vistas of Stockholm’s archipelago. Originally built in 1910 and home to multiple banks before its recent transformation, the landmark centenarian structure welcomes guests through stately bronze doors into its light-filled atrium lobby, with design touches inspired by Renaissance palaces. The hotel offers 115 classically modern hotel rooms, with many donning terraces, as well as a collection of bespoke restaurants and bars.
“This is Stureplansgruppen’s vision of a lifestyle hotel inspired by travels all over the world. With its inviting atmosphere and first-class restaurants, the hotel will occupy a unique place in the Stockholm market. We have created an international boutique hotel for tourists and locals alike. This is a hotel that stands out from the crowd,” says Stureplansgruppen’s CEO and Co-Owner, Vimal Kovac.
Top Swedish interior stylists Ida Lauga and Lo Biurlf created the contemporary aesthetics throughout the 115 rooms and suites, weaving in elements of Bank Hotel’s historic charm. Guests may choose from multiple room types, from the intimate rooms ideal for solo travelers, to the most lavish of the eight meticulously designed suites, Bank Extreme Terrace Suite, measuring 185 square meters with lofty ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, a sheltered balcony running the full length of the suite, and breathtaking views of the city and waterways. Classic touches comingle with natural textures of stone and wood among neutral shades, and the bathrooms utilize marble and bronze for an opulent touch. Toiletries are from Diptyque, and additional in-room amenities include plush terry bathrobes and slippers, a curated minibar, blackout curtains, HDTV with Chromecast, free Wi-Fi, and discreetly integrated technology features. Bank Hotel also provides round-the-clock room service and offers a well-equipped fitness center, complete with a yoga section.
Food & Beverage
Stureplansgruppen tapped industry veteran Carolina Westerlund to oversee the food and beverage program, and with its six different concepts, Bank Hotel offers something for everyone, 24 hours a day. Guest and locals can begin their day with an à la carte breakfast in the beautifully renovated banking hall and round off their evening with a perfectly mixed cocktail on the roof terrace, with views of leafy Djurgården. Bonnie’s, the hotel’s signature restaurant, is a 94-seat dining room with Mediterranean Coastal cuisine, situated on the main floor. At the helm of the kitchen is Head Chef Magnus Persson, who won a bronze medal in Sweden’s culinary competition ”Årets Kock, Chef of the year” (2017). The restaurant has soaring atrium style ceilings, black and white marbled checkered tile floors, and emerald green booths. The restaurant offers a trolley service, bespoke cocktails, a unique wine list, and extensive tea program. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Bonnie’s is an all-day place to enjoy a sunny spot of breakfast, or late-night supper with theatrical touches.
Curated Works of Art is constructed using mahogany paneling and polished marble, set between the Romanesque arches. The atmosphere is modern, sophisticated, and international, and is an ideal spot to begin or end the evening. Open daily,Sophie’s Bar is an all-day lounge, where locals and hotel guests can meet for a low-key supper and after work drinks. ThePapillon Bar is inspired by the original Bank Director’s personal office; with its lush carpet and mahogany walls, this bar is the most elegant and intimate of the three. Situated on the top floors, with double terraces overlooking both the archipelago and city life, Rooftop and Chambre Separé features Asian inspired menus in a laidback environment.
The hotel’s prized and semi-private culinary gem, Chambre Separé, is found behind a discreet door. A winding staircase leads guests to the secluded bar on the ninth floor. The chamber seats twelve and has a private terrace, with 360˚ views.
Design & Decor
In the original structure, architect Thor Thorén merged art deco extravagance with traditional stateliness to exude the opulence of a Renaissance palace, yet the formality of a banking institution. Guests enter through massive bronze doors into a lobby immediately reminiscent of the building’s past, with a checkered marble floor and walls clad in rich mahogany wood, with a custom chandelier from Venice, Italy, and floor-to-ceiling window. Historical elements are preserved throughout the nine floors, while presenting them in a contemporary aesthetic, with plush furnishings, lush planters, and contemporary Swedish artwork carefully selected from Sweden’s most famous and up and coming artists from YoungArt. The Bank Hall restaurant, Bonnie’s, with its soaring glass ceiling, features elegant turquoise stucco work of the original columns. The hotel’s bars, curated works of art themselves, immerse guests in high-design settings.
