To be situated on Arezou Island, close to the Turkish border, Iran said it is planning on employing women to staff public transport, restaurant workers and other facilities. “There will be no men on the island,” said an Iranian tourism official. “Strict segregation actually protects women rather than restricting their rights.”
Iran also said it is planning to set aside parts of beaches only for women, where they can remove their headscarves and wear swimming suit.
Despite Iran’s strict interpretation of Islamic laws, national sports stadiums have allowed men and women to mingle.
