Wellness tourism represents 14.6 percent of all global tourism expenditures (about 1 in 7 tourist dollars), and travelers take 586 million wellness trips each year, according to Virtuoso. Unlike travel to seek cures or recover from illness, wellness tourism is focused on enhancing quality of life and well-being through practices such as meditation and exercise, or receiving anti-aging treatments or personalized counseling about diet or health.
And where better to go for a true wellness experience than Playa del Carmen, Mexico? Long identified as an important holistic center, the destination has a mythical and mystical history dating to the Mayan culture. The clever use of indigenous herbs, meditation and forms of yoga practices can be traced back for generations, and nowadays the tradition continues with the Cenote Spa at the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen Resort.
Fresh off of hosting the inaugural Playa Wellness Summit, an event that brought together holistic, spiritual, and fitness experts to share their knowledge and highlight the energy and vibe that Playa del Carmen offers the world as a grand Mexican Caribbean destination, the Cenote Spa is cementing its place as a vibrant and thriving wellness destination by featuring an array of signature services that provide benefits through the use of natural elements and aromatherapy, including new bespoke treatments like the Burnout Massage, Muscular Tension Treatment, Samunprai Thai Massage, and Deep Relaxation Spa Package and Anti Stress Ritual.
This treatment helps to specifically fight the effects of burnout syndrome, which include loss of sleep, reduced attention span, lower mental performance, signs of depression, anxiety, and irritability, and decreases to the immune system.
The Burnout Relief Massage treats pressure on both the body by attacking the senses with glacial shock, whereby towels soaked in ice water are placed on the forehead and unrolled to cover the entire face. After a 20-minute period, aromatherapy is introduced to cause a chain reaction at the neural level, releasing hormones that reassure the nervous system, specifically those that activate feelings of happiness and harmony.
The second part of the treatment involves bodywork, which includes stretching, seven push-ups, and the application of pressure on trigger points. Finally, a “Neuro-Sedative” relaxing massage is applied to sedate the nervous system and, with it, facilitate decompression, and tensions to disappear.
Muscular Tension Treatment
Massage therapy is one of the best-known alternative remedies for relieving muscle tension. It is believed that massage therapy is about 4,000 years old, and in the 4th century B.C., Hippocrates wrote that patients could be treated by rubbing.
This massage treatment addresses the muscle tissue directly and can assist the muscle in releasing its contraction and reducing tension by placing small, warmed spice bags filled with clove, pepper, anise, ginger, and rosemary in key points across the body.
The warmth and natural spices offer detoxifying benefits, while soothing the muscles and releasing tension and any inflammation. Additionally, the body is massaged with San Juan herbs, also known as Hypericum perforatum, a Spanish herb that performs as a powerful antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic that works along with lavender to provide an overall sense of emotional and physical well being.
