Just 35 minutes from Utah’s Salt Lake City international airport, the ski town of Park City www.visitparkcity.com has started its ski season with a bang Home to two world class ski areas, – Park City Mountain and Deer Valley – belying the town’s humble roots in the silver mining era of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Winter season 2018/19 has been characterized by massive early snowfalls creating a perfect start for skiers and ski resorts alike. More than a metre of Utah’s lighter than light fluffy powde snow had fallen by the end of November.
Park City Mountain has a new star – Maple – the latest trainee avalanche puppy has joined the team of ten highly skilled avalanche dogs. Cute and friendly they may be, but these expertly trained dogs are ready for rescue action when needed on what is the USA’s biggest ski area. Guests can meet them and their handlers each Friday during ski season at the Beach in Canyons Village.
Deer Valley did rather well in the recent World Snow Awards held in Kitzbuhel, Austria. The Stein Eriksend Lodge – not for the first time – won the award as the ‘ Best USA Ski Lodge’ and the Goldener Hirsch Inn was named the the’ Best US Boutique Ski Hotel’. To cap it all, Deer Valley won the title as the ‘Best USA Ski Resort’. Not a bad hat trick at all!
Park City is home to the world’s only (as far as we know) ski to the door whiskey distillery and saloon – the High West, located next to the Town Lift on Park City Mountain. High West is a favourite dining and drinking establishment of locals and visitors, and has produced a number of award winning whiskies.
High West has been joined by a second Park City distiller – Alpine Distillers – based at the 350 Main Street restaurant in the Historic District of Park City. The new distillery is locally run and owned and is producing mountain vodka, gin and whiskey. An Alpine single malt ‘Traveler’s Rest’ won a Gold Award in the American SIP awards – not bad for the new kid on the block.
