Sloth Sanctuary Opens at Nayara Resorts
Nayara Resorts, set on the fringes of Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano, just opened a Sloth Sanctuary, providing a safe home for these peaceful animals. The sanctuary has quickly grown to shelter more than 15 sloths (the property previously only had one or two in residence). Nayara planted 300 Cecropia trees on the property, the sloth’s main food source, which has attracted the newcomers. As sloths have been losing their habitat from human encroachment, the sanctuary has provided a haven from both humans and predators, and they have been thriving in their new environment. Guests of Nayara Springs and Nayara Resort, Spa & Gardens (sister resorts connected by a foot-bridge) have a front row seat to spot these silent and notoriously sedentary creatures in the treetops.
More than just a reserve for sloths, the Sanctuary has become a home for an array of bird species, reptiles, and amphibians, allowing guests to catch glimpses of a variety of tropical wildlife. From the colorful macaws that perch on guests’ terraces to chirping tree frogs and hummingbirds, Nayara is a true retreat for guests and wildlife alike.
